Amazon takes legal action against 1000 fake reviewers
Amazon has started legal action against more than 1,000 people it claims provide fake reviews on its website.

The online retail giant said in the lawsuit, filed in the US on Friday, that its brand reputation was being tarnished by “false, misleading and inauthentic” reviews.

Amazon claims the 1,114 defendants, termed “John Does” as the company said it was unaware of their real names, offer their false review service for as little as $5 (£3.25) on the website Fiverr.com, with most promising five-star reviews for a seller’s products.

You think they're capable of taking responsible action against fake reviewers that are pumping up the rating of their product (I hate those jerks. I began a crusade about people reviewing movie dvds before they were released to the public) ------, and leave the obviously humorous fake products alone?

A good move, but wouldn't the easiest thing be for Amazon just to limit their reviews to actual purchases?

The obvious downside to that would be that we'd lose all those funny reviews....

I find it annoying to have to wade through endless pages of fake reviews written by people who think they're being "funny" in order to try to find a genuine review of the product. I've had that happen on a couple of occasions. I'd be happy to see such reviews banned.

The paid review people can and do buy the product as (optional) part of their "service".

The joke reviews tend to concentrate on a handful of products and they aren't gaming the system for profit so they get a pass as long as they don't get out of hand. Plus it shows Amazon can take a joke. The aluminum foil reviews at the UK site are a good example why they're tolerated. Seriously, what can you review about aluminum foil?

I really doubt this actually goes anywhere. While I agree that bogus reviews are a pain, that doesn't mean they are legally actionable. Paid for reviews are just part of the issue, there are also issues with reviews from people who have an axe to grind for whatever reason. If Amazon wanted to go to the effort and expense of vetting reviews before posting, they could solve the problem, but that's not part of their business model.

I tend not to read book reviews, but I both read and write reviews of physical goods. I think they're extremely valuable for household items in particular; they often point out pros or cons of a product which aren't obvious from its description.
