Substrate of screen cracked. See angled/curved line at top middle of picture. Do a search for the gory details. Short version is you need a new device.

To the OP:

Despite what some of the Kobo aficionados here will tell you, these "mysterious" substrata cracks seems to happen a lot more often to Kobo readers than to say, Kindles.

I have had three out of four Kobo Aura HDs end up with similar screen issues.

I don't mean to pick a fight with those happy with their Kobos, but these screen issues keep popping up and IMO it is an inherent problem with the construction/build quality of at least some Kobos.

Kobo's customer service will keep insisting that because the substrata is cracked, it is your problem, period.

This is why I would not recommend a Kobo to anyone any longer. Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do, other than get another reader. I'd strongly recommend the Kindle Voyage.

Sonist--I know you've had problems with your Aura HDs--you post about it frequently. I don't think I've chimed in in response to your other posts but know that others have--I have to say that I've had an Aura HD for over a year now, and find nothing at all wrong with it--it doesn't seem to be any more fragile than other readers. Mine is kept in a case, but it doesn't receive any special handling from me. I carry it in my bag or purse--it basically goes everywhere I go. It's still going strong (as are my Kindle Voyage, Kindle PW, Sony 650, Sony 350...). I'm sorry you had a run of bad luck with Kobo Aura HDs, but from other posts I've read here and my own experience, your experience seems to be the exception to the norm.

If you could stop doing full quotes of posts directly above yours, that'd be great. (I wouldn't complain except in this case it kind of makes the ignore list pointless.) Sonists' posts are not worth reading, it's always the same story. Kobos break, Kindles don't, and somehow the "broken kindle" results on Google Image Search are exceptions to the rule, and never mind that all eInk devices use the same kind of extremely fragile display technology, devices with flexible displays being virtually nonexistant. He won't be convinced otherwise nor will he stop trolling/lamenting about his oh-so-many Kobos he somehow managed to break.

OP never said what happened to his device, whether it was dropped or what, from the looks of it it was a localized impact on the top-center of the screen. Blame Kobo if it makes you feel better, sorry for your loss, better luck next time with whatever your next device will be.

Yes, I guess these are all just Photoshopped.

I can perfectly understand that most people will be hesitant to share the circumstances in which a broken screen happened (including myself) but we all would benefit from such reports, not for fun but for being able to avoid these situations. That's the reason I'm visiting such threads: to learn, not to moan over my own broken devices.

And thank you for reminding me of the ignore list. I yet never used it, but after having followed many discussions here for a long time in lurking mode I've finally decided to put the list to good use. It bores me to read the same old story over and over again, for me it's time for a new chapter. Even for Gorilla Glass I've seen many a user breaking these things considered to be sturdy.
