P-L-E-A-S-E make an RT version
Open plea for mercy from the (not so good) other ebook readers available on the Microsoft Store for my Surface RT. I almost jumped for joy when I saw the Calibre icon, but alas, that version only reads databases. PLEASE consider adding even just a reader to the RT version.
My trusty little Surface tablet has built-in MS Office and is otherwise a very useful tool for many things, especially when I travel. It would be even better if it had your ebook reader. Thanks. |

Try asking Microsoft to support RT in a halfway reasonable manner.
Really, there was no good reason to require Windows RT to only run special-sauce Metro programs. linux has a strong presence on ARM devices, and most linux programs compile all right for ARM. calibre certainly does, with no changes whatsoever. But Microsoft has locked down what you can do inside the Metro runtime, and for all intents and purposes I think it would qualify as supporting a new OS target. ![]() It also can't even be considered until if and when python ever works on Metro -- but that is only planned (ish) for python3 and calibre uses python2. Summarizing eschwarz's post: Microsoft is only supporting Windows RT on a side note. It seems to be a flopped platform. Also, even IF Kovid would like to make an RT version, it wouldn't even be possible at this time, because Python 2 (the programming language used for Calibre) does not support the tablet's Metro interface.
I think you're out of luck... |

Sounds like you have 2 options left:
1) Convert your books to a format supported by your tablet or 2) Buy a new tablet running a real OS. I have seen that there are trade-in deals to upgrade to the new Microsoft Surface tablets. Last edited by Agama; 08-23-2015 at 10:17 AM. |

i sank a load of money into mini disc, as a music teacher I thought those would be the next great big thing. I had 2 x hi-fi players, a portable recorder, hundreds of "mix" discs of content patiently re-recorded from CDs... ebayed it all last year for a pittance...
I think we still have a commodore Amiga stashed in the attic, with a playstation 1, and an old style nintendo. I kept my sinclair spectrum for years ( finally sold it off ) & I wish I'd kept the BBC micro also - those are pretty rare & valuable now. So long as TVs have scart inputs they can probably still be hooked up. But I am staying clear of e-reader nostalgia, all is sold except for one Sony 350 which still gets occasional family use. oh well - time for the next episode of the excellent "halt & catch fire" on netflix ![]() |

When I bought the RT tablet, MS was touting it as the next sliced bread.
It does have MS Office and it travels incredibly well. I find it extremely useful to work on my novels anywhere with MS Word, pick up my emails with Outlook, work on my business spreadsheets with Excel, and whatever. It's really a very portable micro laptop. I even have a nice keyboard and mouse for it. Even tho dead-end, I still like it. I bought a Samsung tablet. It has a great reader but it is very hard to edit my novels on. It is lousy at email, Excel not much better. My fat fingers don't help either. ... & their attempt at an ebook format & reader... MSreader.. whish stuck around for 10+ years... Microsoft Reader was a Microsoft application for the reading of e-books, originally released in August 2000. Microsoft Reader was available for download from Microsoft as a free application for computers running Windows. It can also be used on a Pocket PC, where it has been built into the ROM since Windows CE 3.0. Microsoft Reader was not supported on newer Windows Phone 7 devices, but it was compatible with Windows Mobile. Microsoft Reader displays books in the .LIT (shortened from "literature") format, an extension of the Microsoft Compressed HTML Help format to include DRM. These e-books can be purchased and downloaded from online stores. The notable features of Microsoft Reader are ClearType for increased readability on small screens, highlighting and doodling designed for quick note-taking, text notes, and searching. The PC version also has an optional plugin for text-to-speech, enabling books to be read out loud. In August 2011, Microsoft announced they were discontinuing both Microsoft Reader and the use of the .lit format for ebooks at the end of August 2012, and ending sales of the format on November 8, 2011. |
