The End of Flash?

Seems Steve Jobs may have been ahead of the curve on this one. Now Google is dropping support for Flash in their Chrome browser. A growing chorus of voices appears to be calling for the death of Flash altogether.

And me... Flash may have had its use, but it's outdated now. And the faster website builders start to wake up to this fact, the better it is...

I experimentally uninstalled Flash from my PC about half a year ago. At the beginning there were a few things on the web that wouldn't work (but never things important enough to make me reinstall Flash), but they have become the rare exception by now.

When surfing the Net on my iPad, I come across sites every now and the that don't function properly because of the Flash content, but there aren't enough such sites to make me wish Apple did Flash. A few sites with limited functionality is a small price to pay to be free of that favorite target of hackers.

There is no flash support on android anymore.
But it's been a while since I last was annoyed by the 'missing plug-in' message.

You can uninstall Flash on your PC if you have Chrome installed.

It has its own flash runtime.

I use Firefox fulltime. Without flash.

On the rare occasion I need flash, I open Chrome.

Flash was created to fill in specific need, one that's basically gone away with HTML5. The sooner all sites that use Flash change to using HTML5 instead, the better.

It's been all but inevitable for years now.

The biggest source of flash is videos.
Google has long since made Youtube capable of playing video in pure HTML5. So have many other video sources.

Advertising -- hmphh, those just deserve to DIEEEE, flash or HTML5.

The last big holdout is apparently flash games, I am not sure why those would be so important, but Mozilla's Shumway project aims to preserve these by delivering an open-source HTML5 reimplementation of the flashplugin.

Forgot to mention that: I installed Shumway before I got rid of Flash.

I've been calling for the death of flash for at least five years now. Thankfully my initiative seems to finally be gaining some momentum.

I tried that, some time ago. It didn't work very well, IIRC -- though undoubtedly it has gotten better since then.

I may have caught it in its early days.

What kind of things is Shumway working for these days?

I can't really tell you. Shumway only tells me it's there when something isn't working. That used to happen quite a bit when I started with it, but now has become very rare.
