The no fuss, muss, or bother jail break
OK Amazon, record this transcript, you have to be dragged into the 21st. century.
Now lets pretend that you are a for-profit, forward looking, high tech. company - - You would like to fix that sucky code problem, and perhaps make a buck or two (per Kindle) in the process. Here is the outline of what has to happen:
Now the Kindle owner can install any update package signed by the corresponding private key. No mystery there - if they sent their request containing MR's public key, then they could install any of our stuff. Or they could build and package their own stuff to be installed on their Kindle. We make it easy - everything on our end is already done and available on-line (see: KindleTool). Now, with this system in-place, you are very close to meeting the requirements of GPLv3 and you make a buck or two on every Kindle doing it. Say hello, ![]() Note that you have never revealed your private key to anything other than your super-computer(s). Now, are you going to leave that money laying on the table or not? We all thought you where a for-profit corporation. ![]() Last edited by knc1; 08-28-2015 at 05:01 PM. |

They will never do it and because they keep stopping me from doing what I want to my kindle (Right now I want the Shepherd's Crown as my screen saver) I am looking at alternatives. As well as taking my business elsewhere. Whilst I know this is technically the wrong forum to ask. Any suggestions?
I have the Voyage and other than the restrictions I love it. Same as my PW2, PW and touch before. But the other 3 had their restrictions removed. Maybe waterproof? Depending on extra cost. |

Yup - this isn't a very hot item with our members either. ![]() - - - - So, back to top of my todo list - a minimum skill serial port connection. With every touch screen device, other than the K5, running some version of the 5.6.x firmware - - Making the installation of a serial port require fewer special skills will be more useful to the community than ragging on Amazon. |

If you want a tester knc1, please look no further. I need the screensaver to change and have a selection of devices.

For right now, I have enough "for parts only" Kindles to serve as (attempted) demos. I originally expected the "low skills connection" to take a weekend, I have been working on it everyday for a month now. Which means I should be getting close to publishing something. ![]() There have also been some suggestions made by other people that might be better than my own that I want to add into the mix. = = = = Low skills :: Meaning you don't need the eyesight of a gemstone expert nor the steady hands of a neurosurgeon in addition to being able to solder. = = = = DIY conductive ink - http://spectrum.ieee.org/geek-life/h...conductive-ink but still a bit expensive for the person who only needs three dots worth to connect the wire leads to the three connection points. ![]() I will try coming up with something that does not require such exotic materials. Question: could anyone indicate a a soldering equipment plus accessories or relevant minimal characteristics required for such an experiment? Thank you very much indeed.

I heart this idea. How do I vote?

I would definitely get behind this, if that is what it took.
OTOH, I can't help but feel an acceptable alternative would be simply to offer an official developer's certificate in a "void-your-warranty-and-modify-your-device" optional update. Ostensibly Amazon wants to offer a smooth experience, right? ![]() They will save more money by quitting the fight than they would make with this system. |
