Calibre on App Store

Why there is no option to download Calibre from Apple App Store (the desktop version, not the mobile)? I think it would be good to spread it out, and to keep it updated.

Because Apple makes it App store licensing incompatible with the GPL and generally speaking I find the idea of jumping through hoops to get my software "approved" by Apple offensive. There would be no way calibre's pace of development would be compatible with the app store review process.

Difficult to keep updated

Surely Kovid has the last word, but the approval process of the App Store makes it very difficult to keep up with Calibre development, which proceeds at a speed like no other widely used software I now of. Additionally, it's better to keep just one source for all operating systems instead of keeping track of them individually.

Ooops, replied before seeing Kovid's answer, but all that he said too.

Thank you for both of your replies. I wasn't aware of App Store licensing issues. Too bad they are too strict, I bet they would get a lot of good quality applications on their store if the approval process was smoother.

The App store is about $$ (or stuff that leads to more )

Not only is Calibre FREE, it has features (and plugins) that go counter to their walled garden ecosystem

Don't you mean "their wallet garden ecosystem"?

Do note that there is a sticky thread in the Related Tools subforum for each OS, offering an automatic updater.

IIRC the OSX one is an app you run manually, I wrote the linux auto-updater (emphasis on automatic) and ported it to OSX -- see its home here: https://github.com/eli-schwartz/calibre-installer
And I finally got confirmation that someone uses the OSX version successfully, so I feel comfortable recommending it.
