Dead ink? Black when should be white and vice verse!
Ok everyone, I'm sure this has been asked before, but just to make a case. My Kindle has a very good screen except two tiny spots which when it should be black is white and vice verse! I have attached the pictures. The first two from left are same spot, shown when background is black and when white.
The third picture is for the other defected spot. What are your thought? Is it a hardware issue or software? If I re-flash the Kindle OS, it'll resolve it? asking because no pressure has been applied onto it and it had been kept pampersed all the time! ![]() |

They are burst capsules on the eInk screen, which is generally the result of physical damage. I'm afraid it's a hardware issue; nothing to do with software.

I see. Based on your experience, and given this DXG is already 4 years old, if I take good care of it, would they one day just stop working just because?!!! I mean, is there a fix number of years when they boom they stop working? O_O

I don't think there's any way to know if the screen will get worse or develop more bad spots but I'd guess the odds are in your favor. Eventually the battery will die and very likely that'll happen before the screen has more problems. But there are no guarantees.

I think it will last just fine.
![]() I have a small burst capsule myself, along the left side. Not very noticeable, nothing more has happened in over a year, Kindle still going strong. ![]() |

I am with you... It's very solid. With all bashing some people do against Amazon (well, sometimes even myself), but still it's a lovely device and absolutely serves the purpose which is to read eBooks... indeed very well. I hope it lasts long.

I doubt that batteries will be available for it once it's a few years older, but again, you just never know. I tend to buy extras of the devices I'm most fond of. I have for years. I used to tell myself it was so I'd have a backup if the main one ever wore out. But so far in almost every case when the main one wore out the device was sufficiently out of date that I no longer cared. I still tend to do that with certain devices but these days I realize it's to make me feel good and not because of any practical considerations. The Kindle DX might be an exception to that since "out of date" implies there's a better model available and that might not be true with the DX for those who are fond of it. I've never used one so I don't really know what it is people love about it but it seems to be a most loved device among a lot of people. Maybe your solution is to simply recognize that someday you might be without it and see if that helps you enjoy it even more while you have it. Barry |
