Or just use your cell phone or an iPod.
(I see you do have an iPod.) |

Amazon no longer sells K3 so the only one you can buy would be used. I use a Sansa portable MP3 player.

Well, there are all kinds of audio files one can get.
The type I enjoy are OTR [Old Time Radio] programs, most of which are free. These predated television, and are either 30 or 60 minutes long. They make for some terrific entertainment. Other members enjoy hearing actual books, but I only occasionally will listen to a novel. I much prefer to read it. If you have your iPod (mine is a Classic gig 80 unit), then use iTunes to load them into your Library and sync. Be careful, of course, with syncing since you don't want to delete your entire library. Most often, I'll just download a whole gig of mp3 files and load them onto my Kindle tablet, since the process seems easier. If you have a tablet [non-Apple], then just load them into a file into a folder and find a good mp3 app that will read them and keep a bookmark for you. Here are a ton of free mp3 files of Old Time Radio shows: https://archive.org/details/oldtimeradio I'm downloading the program "Dimension X" right now. It's 1.3 gigs of 50 shows total. That's 25 hours of listening pleasure. |

Note that radio drama is alive and well on BBC radio - nothing "old time" about it

Just this past week my wife informed me that our Kindle 3 Keyboard 3G bit the dust. Half the screen is blank Everything seems to work but you can't see half the screen I have searched and it appears that I can buy a new replacement screen for about $40. The DIY articles on how to take the Kindle apart and put in the new parts are readily available Still I was thinking that maybe a $119 touch paperwhite with 300 ppi and a self lit screen would be pretty nice especially with a sale, but then I read that the new e-ink Kindles don't read ordinary text to you, and I liked that function especially while driving/traveling My new plan is to take the old Kindle apart and get an idea of the complexity. The real problem is that they keep warning you how delicate the screens are. If I am still confident after I have disassembled the Kindle, I will take the risk and order the new screen. |

It sounds like you need noise-cancelling headphones, and not another player.

On some books on Amazon you can add audible narration. The audio is synced with the text, and allows you to switch between listening or reading. On my phone I tend to use audio a lot, on my tablet I sometimes increase the font size and turn on a black background ... just listening while the text being read is highlighted. And I also enjoy no audio at times, just reading on my Kindle PW2.
It cost´s a little bit more, but it´s totally worth it I think. I don´t recommend the kindle keyboard for audiobooks, because my experience at least was that it was receptive to digital noise and the occational crash. Use your regular audio equipment instead :-) For listening on the subway, closed headphones or isolated in-ears works just fine. The apple ear pods are too open. (Noise-cancelling headphones tend to have some background hiss and cancel out so much it feels like I´m stuck in some sort of vacuum, so I prefer the passive dampening of closed headphones, although it´s less effective) |

I never had any problems with audio books on my Kindle Keyboard. It sounded great.
