There seems to be a Firmware Update for older Kindle (k4nt) devices. From the dates of the converted update file it's dated 9. July 2015. Contains lots of patches as it seems.

Has someone already tested the update? Does the jailbreak still work?

I can't think why not. Unless Amazon decides to start rolling out full system image updates for their really old models.

Unlike some tech companies Amazon doesn't actually go to strenuous efforts to wipe out jailbreaks -- they just trample roughshod over the JB as a side effect of other things.

I did apply the update, and still was able to install stuff afterwards (did try with the screensaver hack, which I did not have on 4.1.2), and I still have Bookerly as my font.

One thing that seems not to work is the reboot/autoreboot in linkss. But it works in linkfonts, so I guess it has nothing to do with the upgrade.

Another factor that may be in-play:
The Kindle + Amazon firmware ==> a lock-in to the Amazon store.
The Kindle + Doukan project ==> a lock-in to the Doukan store.

The lock-in to an on-line store is a recurring revenue.

The design, development, production of the Kindle hardware is a (one time) major cost.
The sales of the hardware is a one-time revenue. Although Amazon's books are closed (no pun intended), it is hard to imagine that their hardware sales come anywhere close to recovering that cost. (It was, originally, a loss-leader marketing research tool.)

What for-profit organization that paid that major cost would be willing to give up that recurring revenue to another for-profit organization that did not pay any part of that cost?

They now have a device which can avoid the hijacking of those recurring sales by all except the very few with the hardware skills to open it up and modify the hardware (I.E: add serial port connections).

If they where serious about denying all access, they would have dropped the serial port pin-out long ago.

And their tactics seem to have worked, the Doukan project, **as a commercial enterprise** certainly appears dead.
Lucky for the start-up owners, they got Doukan sold just before Amazon killed off the (easy), closed-kindle, software jail break(s).

Perhaps it is because I live in a capitalist country, but I think it is all about the money.

It was more a "defense of the revenue stream" by a corporate giant than an attack on any specific target.

I think the Duokan Store was what made the sleeping giant get serious, not our fonts and screensavers hacks.

I do see in there what is evidently the SSL/TLS security updates.

That should complete security updates for all devices since the Series 2 (K2/DX/DXG).
And newman has just shown us how to update the Series 2 devices.

The original K1 is still out in the cold, but we don't even try to support that one so I can't say anything snarky about Amazon/Lab126 forgetting they ever built it.

@olig: Yeah, when both hacks are installed, only *one* of them handles the autoreboot stuff; and, yeah, IIRC, that's always the Fonts hack that takes precedence .

I think I may just do that. However, don't you think this update might have been a prelude for another one along the road with Bookerly and other things too?
In your opinion, will the K4 continue to be supported through further firmware updates?

i doubt it. They aren't adding new features, just delivering bug- and security-fixes.
