Calibre had become very slow

I did a search here and find people having a problem with Calibre freezing on them. I do not have this problem. My problem is that Calibre has become very unresponsive...very slow. It loads fine and sits there running but when I switch to it and click add books, often the screen goes white for about 30 seconds and then Calibre displays again. Adding a book results in the add book UI hanging for anything up to 40 seconds before the progress bar starts moving. When the progress bar completes, the download UI remains on top for about another 20 seconds before finishing.

Like I say, Calibre loads fine but it seems that if it's not accessed much during a session then it becomes very slow.

Polishing or converting work fine so I'm thinking it's some kind of issues between Calibre and its library.

I'm on Windows 8.1 64Bit, running Calibre vers 3.33 but as I have had this problem for a few weeks I'm going to try going back to v3.28 before rooting around in the system.

BTW I have 124GB free on my hard disk so it's not a space issue.

I'm running Calibre 3.33 64-bit on Windows 7 Home, Windows 8. Home, and Windows 8.1 Pro. I've not seen any of the problems you've mentioned. I think it's something with your system rather than Calibre.

It is fine on W7 Pro (x64)
Calibre 2.0 has always been slow on XP.
Wait; Everything modern is slow on XP. It is the 2001 era programs that still run fast.

calibre 2.x doesn't even run on XP without non-trivial hacking...

I don't see this problem on linux either.
(I found calibre to be generally slow on Windows, but I blame that on a combination of anti-Windows sentiment and using underpowered systems. )

Maybe the OP's computer is performing overaggressive swapping?

I have the original 2.0 that still allowed XP installs. No hack was needed.
I have one of the 'Lucky' systems where it does run.

That's sounds a bit suss to me - what happens if you start calibre and add a book immediately ?

What happens if you do a Save to Disk on the same drive - if that's also slow then...

What about other disk operations, try copying some chunky files with File Explorer

I actually copied the library to a new location but it made no difference. No other application has this problem and I am able to copy files between folders (which I do frequently) with no performance issues. It's only Calibre that has this issue. I have run Calibre for around 2 years now and it is only in the last 2-3 weeks that I have seen this problem. The only change has been automated Windows updates. I uninstalled 2.33 last night and installed Windows 64bit v2.33 but the problem is still there. Before doing an upgrade to Windows 10 I am going to try moving the library to another disk.

Thanks for your help and advice guys, much appreciated.

@jukin - moving the library to another drive is a good idea.

If that doesn't fix it, try excluding the library from your AV. Many (most) AV's do high frequency silent updates which introduce new 'problems', to justify their existence I guess.

What about calibre's Save to Disk, is it slow?

Another 'trick' would be to install an older version (e.g. 3.28) of 32 bit calibre, it can coexist with the existing 2.33 64 bit install, and it will use the same settings and libraries. That should show whether or not it is a recently introduced problem with calibre -which I very much doubt by the way.

BR

Where did all these v3.33 an v3.28's come from???

I agree -- nothing interesting has changed recently which should cause something like this to happen, I doubt it is an issue with caibre itself, alone.
