Kindle Fire HD [???] 7 - what firmware version? [SOLVED- w/add. interesting posts]
I'm confused about the most current firmware version. I have 32 gigs of ram. To be perfectly clear, I do NOT have an HDX version.
My S/N prefix has D059, running software version 7.4.8. The D059 prefix would indicate that I have a Kindle Fire HD 7. Yet, in checking on Amazon's site for the most current version, I see 4.5.4. See here, quoted: Fire HD 7 Software Updates We have a new, free software update available for your Fire HD 7. This update automatically downloads and installs on your device when connected wirelessly; however, you can also manually download the software and transfer the update to your device via USB cable. The software update includes general improvements and performance enhancements. Determine your software version Determine the current software version on your Fire HD 7 before downloading and installing a software update. Swipe down from the top of the screen and then tap Settings. Tap Device Options, and then tap System Updates. If you have the latest software update, it should look like this: Your device is running Fire OS 4.5.4. Their version for the Kindle Fire HD (Second Generation) shows the same version: 4.5.4 I suspect this may be the version I need: Determine Your Software Version Determine the current software version on your Kindle Fire HD 7" before downloading and installing a software update. You may already have the latest software update or you may need to install a previous software version before you can install the latest software update. Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings, and then tap More. Tap Device, and then tap About. If you have the latest software update, it should look like this: 7.5.1_user_5172620. If you see an earlier version, proceed with the steps in Download & Install Software Updates Automatically. YET, the quote above ALSO REFERENCES the same name as in the very FIRST quote: Kindle Fire HD. |

Thank you, JoseB1.
It appears as if I have this one, based upon the photos: 2012 Kindle Fire HD 7" (2nd Generation). ???? = but Amazon shows the current version as 4.5.4 |

One of my biggest gripes with Amazon is the naming scheme they use for their tablets. They'll use the same name for 2 or 3 models in a row and then after the fact, they go back and differentiate the models with a generation name. By then it's too late because people are already used to the original name and they get confused as to which model they have. |

Well, that is strange, because your software indicates 1st gen and the photo indicates 2nd gen. |

Yet my Kindle Fire doesn't have the ports in the same configuration according the website that JosieB1 provided. According to that site, mine looks EXACTLY like the one that the photos (all the photos) list as the 2012 Kindle Fire HD 7" (2nd Generation). The ports, as shown on the photo of the 2012 Kindle Fire HD 7", completely match my Kindle Fire. What to do? |

According to that website the HD didn't come out until 2012 so that makes yours a 2nd Gen IMO

Thanks, Tubemonkey.
Mine's the one on the top left. Logic would seem to dictate that I need software version 7.5.1 (based upon the 7.4.8 that is currently on there), so I went ahead and downloaded the 7.5.1. All appears to be working fine. -- I was hoping for that new font, but I guess I'll have to wait. Thank you to all who helped me. ![]() |

For future reference, if the order was purchased from amazon, you can look up the old invoice and click on the product and it will take you to the product page and tell you the generation it was you purchased.

It's funny you would say that. I went to check on Amazon, just before my latest post to Tubemonkey, and then realized that I had actually bought it from Best Buy! Again, a big 'thank-you' to everyone who weighed in on this and tried to help me - and DID help me! I wouldn't have figured this one out on my own. |

Did anyone notice, the currently sold HDX now says
Kindle Fire HDX 7", HDX Display, Wi-Fi, 16 GB - Includes Special Offers (Previous Generation - 3rd) So that must mean a new generation is due to be released soon, IMO. |

I'd be more tempted by a screen size @ 8" with a 4:3 ratio. amazon always makes good quality hardware so that wouldn't even be a concern.
