Patrick Rothfuss' New Books

I would highly recommend "Name of the Wind" and "A Wise Man's Fear" by Patrick Rothfuss. If you like fantasy these new books are a must read.

I like the books. His prose is fantastic, but Rothfuss would benefit hugely from a slightly more aggressive editor.

*snip, snip*

Agreed. I'm about 3/4 through Wise Man's Fear, and the part with in the fae was... badly paced. Aside from that, I love the way he writes. Reminds me of Robin Hobb's Farseer series.

Haven't read his fantasies, but I did pick up, just this morning, a copy of The Adventures of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle by Patrick Rothfuss.

Quote:
This is not a book for children.

It looks like a children's book. It has pictures. It has a saccharine-sweet title. The main characters are a little girl and her teddy bear. But all of that is just protective coloration. The truth is, this is a book for adults with a dark sense of humor and an appreciation of old-school faerie tales.

There are three separate endings to the book. Depending on where you stop, you are left with an entirely different story. One ending is sweet, another is horrible. The last one is the true ending, the one with teeth in it.

The Adventures of the Princess and Mr. Whiffle is a dark twist on the classic children's picture-book. I think of it as Calvin and Hobbes meets Coraline, with some Edward Gorey mixed in.

Simply said: This is not a book for children.

I loved Name of the Wind; one of my favourite books of last year. I'm really looking forward to reading the second one. I know it's available at Amazon for my Kindle, but I'm being unusually patient.

Regards

I picked this book up in Audible "audio book" format as my free credit title during the 30 day trial. After about 2 hours of listening I've come to the conclusion that I really don't like audio books. Perhaps if I was driving, or on a plane, or working out ... but just wide awake in the middle of the day, my mind and eyes are too busy focusing on other things to be able to pay attention to details.

Kind of bums me out, because I think I'd really like this book. Guess I'll have to just buy the ebook and do it the ol' fashioned way. At least the Audible book was free.

These are well worth reading, and you should start with The Name of the Wind. The first was voted one of the best of the decade: Best SFF Novels of the Decade: An Appreciation of The Name of the Wind. The 2nd has been reviewed three times by Jo Walton at tor.com. Her spoiler free review is Worth waiting for: Patrick Rothfuss’s The Wise Man’s Fear.

Very much worth reading, but I agree with the length and editing comments. I'm 90% done with the second one, and it seems like his editor gave him a bit too much "sophomore slack", or too much freedom with the second book, because the first did so well.

Definitely good the first time through, but I doubt I'll reread this one anytime soon.

I read on his blog that he felt like he spent a lot more time on the first book. I'm not done with the second book, but I love it... I'm just disappointed I have only 20% left.

In general, I'm not a sci-fi/fantasy fan, but I (reluctantly) read his first one for a book club. I was hooked! I read his second one the weekend it came out. I have to agree that it wasn't quite as enthralling. Regardless, I hope we don't have to wait years for the third!!!

You will.
I'll go out on a limb and say three--minimum.
