NON_FICTION
"The Days of the French Revolution" by Christopher Hibbert (350 pages) is a decent chronology of the events. "When the King Took Flight" by Timothy Tacket (290 pages) covers the revolution up to the execution of Louis XVI There's also "Citizens: A Chronicle of the French Revolution" by Simon Schama, but that may be a bit long (950 pages) viz. your requirement of 500 pages or less. FICTION "A Tale of Two Cities" by Charles Dickens "The Scarlet Pimpernel" by Baroness Orczy Last edited by bfisher; 06-20-2015 at 12:15 AM. |

Two other novels:
Sabatini, Rafael. Scaramouche (1921): A tale of the French Revolution in which a fugitive hides out in a commedia dell'arte troupe and later becomes a fencing master. France, Anatole. The gods are athirst [Les dieux ont soif] (1912): The story of the infernal rise of Évariste Gamelin, a young Parisian painter, involved in the section for his neighborhood of Pont-Neuf, The Gods Are Athirst describes the dark years of the Reign of Terror in Paris, from Year II to Year III. (The synopses are courtesy of Wikipedia). Both eBooks are available from Project Gutenberg, free of charge. |

When you are ready for a break from classics and non-fiction Illusion by Paula Volsky is a good re-telling of the french revolution set in a fantasy world. Unfortunately AFAIK its not available as an ebook, and it is a behemoth.

Mark Steel, Vive la Revolution.
A serious history by someone who knows his stuff, but who is a stand-up comedian as well. Funny, immensley readable, un-pompous, and true. Covers the politics, but also keeps a good eye on the man and woman in the street viewpoint as well. And not too long. Recommended. |

A Place of Greater Safety: A Novel by Hilary Mantel
My book club just did this. It's an early novel of hers and isn't up to say Wolf Hall standards. Greg |
