Use e-ink reader without computer, just ipad
Not sure which forum this question should go in - this seemed like a possiblity.
Is it possible to use a common e-ink reader (Kindle paperwhite or Kobo Touch) without a computer, just an iPad? I can't seem to locate any information about transferring books from an iPad to the reader. I have no problem getting books to the iPad (via Dropbox, email, Gutenberg download, etc), but don't know the next step. And why would I want to read on an e-ink reader instead of the iPad? Bright sunshine, sandy beaches are reason enough for me. Thanks for any input. |

You can certainly use a Kindle without a computer of any sort. Buy your books from the Kindle bookstore, or send files to Amazon's Cloud storage via email from your iPad, and you can download them over Wifi or 3G on the Kindle.

You can download directly via the Kindle or Kobo browser as well, from Dropbox/Gutenberg or even email depending on whether your email service does attachments in their mobile interface.
So you don't need your iPad -- which is good because there is nothing you can actually do with it, they can't connect to each other. (Except maybe through USB OTG.) Or as HarryT said, you can buy exclusively from the builtin ebookstore. Or the Kindle can have ebooks emailed to it. As for why you would want an e-ink ereader -- there are a variety of reasons. Reading in bright sunlight, increased battery life, less distracting than a multimedia all-purpose device, because LCD displays hurt some peoples' eyes, etc. etc. |

I have never used this, so I can't vouch for its quality, but after a failed attempt to log into dropbox from the internal browser (Dropbox does all kinds of crazy 'fancy' stuff that the Kindle browser can't handle) I did a quick Google search and found this:

There was actually a thread here discussing that. It's fixed now (last I checked).

What's fixed? Dropbox with the internal browser? Maybe on the newer firmwares... I have a PW1, so it hasn't been updated in a while, and even with the latest firmware it can't log in to Dropbox as of today.

How could you stand to use an iPad without a computer? No backup for anything.
Where are you getting the books on the iPad from? If from mobileread, you can use the experimental browser to get them. I use the doownload file (Kindle Download Guide), which I also downloaded via the Kindle browser. Baen might be harder - i haven't tried them via the browser. They have had to discontinue their email service, due to Amazon restrictions. Of course, you can buy Amazon books via the Kindle store on the Kindle. |

Are you talking about a download link in the purchase email? I haven't looked at that in ages. I always just download from my account page, via USB. I used to have them email direct to my Kindle, but I understand that Amazon is having them discontinue that.

Amazon is asking them to discontinue emailing directly from their website to your Kindle email address. The workaround is to have Baen email the file to your email instead of the Kindles and then you yourself forwarding it to the Kindle address for delivery to the device.

I didn't see anything on their web site about that option (yet), but the web site still shows the option to email to your Kindle address.

![]() EDIT: Just tried Dropbox. They must have broken something because it crashes the browser again. ![]() The good news is it no longer takes the whole OS with it, triggering a reboot. ![]() Last edited by eschwartz; 06-21-2015 at 12:44 AM. |

I can e.g. connect my Kindle DX to enclosure(i.e. HD) using Kindle' cable and then wirelessly transfer books from HD/iPad to and fro Kindle, using enclosure's app for iPad or Android. No need for iPad jailbreaking. Last edited by markom; 06-21-2015 at 04:02 AM. |
