converting coursesmart to pdf
greetin's
i have built a coursesmart to pdf converter and am currenly using it to convert my own e-Material to pdf; i really like to share it publicly, but i'm not certain if it is a legal action; could sb clarify this issue f'me ( i.e, tell me whether it would be all right to put the converter's src code on a public repo)? thanks a lot |

It sounds extremely legally dubious to me, I'm afraid. Certainly in the US, distribution of DRM removal tools is a criminal offence under the DMCA.

Thanks a lot for the response; as for the drm, the format used in the ebooks, based on my speculations, is bare SWF with no drm scheme applied whatsoever; i'd be glad to know if providing a means to convert, or more technically compile, that format to pdf would still bear any legal implications as i'm miserably novice when it comes to legal part of dev; there are some "converters" already on the wb (e.g., https://github.com/search?utf8=✓&q=CourseSmart) and that they've not been frownd upon has piqued my nterest in sharing my own device with others. thanks a lot

There is PDF to Epub which converts from PDF to html, Kindle or epub so certainly there are converters that convert from PDF so I can't see a problem if you aren't breakingDRM as HarryT points out. I'm not a lawyer though so don't take my word as gospel on the subject. Your best bet would be to consult a lawyer who deals with such legal issues.

calibre reverse-engineered the MOBI/AZW3 formats, so I don't see any problem with reverse-engineering this one. The issue would of course be DRM, as the DMCA makes it illegal to circumvent copy protection -- it isn't a blanket ban on reverse-engineering.
