Long presses barely work in 3.15
Mucho frustratio.
I'm assuming others have seen this too? The long press -- for instance, in the Library to bring up the context menu to manage a book, or in the book itself to add a highlight or notation -- rarely works for me under 3.15. And when I release the press, the reader normally interprets the whole thing as a single tap, and turns the page in whichever direction. (In the Library, usually that, or else it sometimes opens the book.) So annoying. I doubt it's a hardware issue. This feature was working (well, not absolutely reliably, but most of the time) under 3.12.1 and earlier, but under 3.15 it almost never works at all. I tried a factory reset and re-installation of my Aura HD, but there's no improvement. (And yes, I've checked that the screen and bevel are clean, and that the device is fully charged.) I guess I'll go back to 3.12.1 for the moment. I contacted Kobo CC to raise it as an issue, but they had no answer (currently). Others are seeing this though, right? |

Sorry, I can't agree. I'm not seeing any difference with 3.15.0 on any of my Kobo ereaders. I'd tend to say that it is working better for me for selecting a word in a book, but that might have been a gradual change of the last few firmware versions.

But David, you did agree that you were experiencing this as well when I mentioned it in the 3.15-dedicated thread.

But I'm not sure what it is you're "disagreeing" with here. |

Wow. I have no idea how I ended up with two copies (almost) of the one post. That's weird.

This was the first thing I noticed with the new firmware 3.15.0. With 'this' I mean that it takes much longer for the device to react to my pressing a word for lookup in one of the dictionaries. But it's not a big deal, I can get used to this. Though there's a noticeable difference.
My two cents... |

I'm also experiencing a much slower reaction from touch with 3.15.
Like the brightness, sliding the finger now, nothing happens for a very short while, and then suddenly the change happens. I love my Kobo-reader, but I really wonder how the software team functions at Kobo.... All-in-all it's good enough, even with the quarks, but many things are so bloody unnecessary. I've been experiencing both the long press problem and the delayed reaction for the light slide at the screen edge.

Maybe the time taken to recognize the long press as a such instead of a tap has increased. If so, I didn't notice and have already compensated for it. |

I'll add my voice to those who feel like you have to hold the press slightly longer for it to register (i.e. looking up a word in dictionary). It's not a big difference, more a subtle one, but I've been feeling that way before this thread came along.

I have noticed a small timing difference in the touch response with 3.15.0, but it is very slight, not any sort of problem. It is hard to say whether it is better or worse, just a bit different.
Edit: The touch gestures are one of the things affected by setting LeanAndMean=false in the [FeatureSettings] section of the device's configuration file. Last edited by GeoffR; 05-11-2015 at 08:57 PM. |

For me, it's not "very slight", Geoff -- almost every time it doesn't happen at all.
In contrast to the posts that say "it doesn't happen on my device" (thereby strongly implying that it must not happen on anyone else's either, or that people are making something out of nothing), I think it's interesting that I spoke to Kobo Customer Care last night, and the operative I spoke with took the time to test the long press on test devices they had in the centre for just such purposes. He tried it on two Aura HDs, both running 3.15. One had no issues with long presses, and the other consistently reproduced the issue I was raising: that long presses produced no response at all. He did mention that the one where long presses worked was an N905C, and the one where they didn't work was an N905B (which mine also is), though they were unwilling to state that that was the reason for the different result. (Fair enough, I think.) The incident has been escalated, as they could reproduce it, and I was told they took it seriously enough that they are willing to replace my device over this even though it's out of warranty. (I'm reluctant to do that, because I don't believe it's faulty hardware -- I didn't have this problem under any of the last few firmwares, and I know Kobo tends to take a bit of a hit-and-a-hope approach to replacing hardware as a way of trying to resolve issues.) I'm in the process -- as i agreed to do -- of doing a full factory reset of my HD, and re-installation of the new firmware and, of course, my Library and my collections, and see how it behaves. (Massive pain, thinking of trying to load books back into the Collections, if the long press isn't going to work!) I was never suggesting that everyone had the same problem, only asking if other people did. But I'm glad to see that Kobo, at least, can reproduce the issue. MacEachaidh - since you are going through the trouble of a reset and having to restore everything, why not just revert back to 3.12.0 since you had no issues on it? I'm surprised kobo said they would exchange your device for something that so clearly seems to be a firmware issue. I don't blame you for not sending it in. I don't think anyone had these issues with the long press on 3.12.00.
Good luck either way. ![]() |

Believe me, I though of it! ;-) I just want the thing to work, and if playing along gives me the most recovery options (the chance to get the hardware replaced if that's what it really turns out to be), then I figure it's worth keeping that possibility open.
Kobo CC wanted me to try 3.15 again, both to see if a re-install would solve the problem ("yes, I know you've already done it twice, but it can't hurt to try it just one more time, eh?") and because the Kobo Desktop only allows you to recover the most recent firmware version. I was told that sideloading another version of the firmware was absolutely *not* endorsed nor supported by Kobo, and would void the warranty they were willing to extend me. Besides, since Kobo had reproduced the problem, it's worth letting them escalate it. They might actually find something they can fix. |
