Apple

January brings a
solitary apple
that clings in iridescence
to a lonely upper branch.

A desiccated beauty
And why only one?
Squirrels have not touched it
birds have left it be

Poison, profound or pious
I may never know
I’m reconciled to beauty alone
for only crows know truth



Reaching for Orion


Orion has always been my guiding light
I yearn to reach, to touch to follow

Yet when I do the stars shift and change
as I leave the Earth, Polaris
is no longer the North Star

and the closer I get to Orion
the further away I become

An Even Trade


Death it seems is an even trade
for the privilege to be born
into this life, this incredible life
in this wondrous universe

To have the honor of looking up
at the billions of night sky stars
as though they were twinkling just for me
and perhaps, perhaps they are

They say we are made of star stuff
and to star stuff one day I’ll return
to be flung again by supernova
into vast and empty space

Given time I’ll once more become
alive and gazing out
staring up at billions of stars
knees weak and struck with awe

Silent Spirit


The pictures were brilliant
the best ever seen from the
surface of Mars. Then
as it reached out
to touch that surface,
like Adam reaching
to touch the finger of God,
it died, sending only a
nondescript tone across
millions of miles –
a heart monitor flatlined
leaving humanity listening
with perked ears and
waiting on Opportunity.
 


Protoplanet Seeks Stable Orbital Arrangement


It’s a pinball game out here
multiple balls in play

I can’t take it anymore
I need some quiet, some space
some snuggle time in
a single stable relationship

How long must I wait?
 


Quantum Soup


Cook it up in empty space
a dash of beauty
some truth and charm
mix it up in an expanding storm

Cool it down
to baryon foam
for the atoms
to make our home

Chock full of more poems than you can shake a stick at.

The Utah Park water level is back to normal but lots of debris that is still being cleaned up.
Peoria street (a major North/South street) where the water overflowed from the floods is still closed as they work to repair the damages. I'm sure there are some flood poems building up that will be in a future collection.

How Seeds Learned to Fly


They were taught by their mothers
but first they had to get there
all that way
up on high

The climb from primordial oceans
was not an easy feat
billions of years of trial and error
victory and defeat

all to give a final push
of seedling breaking free
floating downward like snowflakes
from the mighty cottonwood trees

I stop for a moment in wonder
astonished by nature’s game
imagine myself in a snow globe
as beauty dances ‘round me
