Calibre Version Conundrum
I use the Mac OS version of Calibre. I currently have version 2.23 installed and I just downloaded version 2.30. Here is the question: On the download page http://calibre-ebook.com/download_osx it says at the top: "calibre works on OS X 10.7 (Lion) and higher." however, midway down it also says: If you are using OS X older than 10.8 (Mountain Lion), the last version of calibre that will work on your machine is 1.48,..."
Now version 2.23 worked fine on my iMac running Mac OS 10.7.5 (Lion) and I just launched version 2.30 without problems. So shouldn't the second quote above say "If you are using OS X older than 10.7 (Lion)..." ? |

calibre theoretically works on 10.7, but certain things do not. Device detection is unreliable and the graphics toolkit calibre uses no longer official supports 10.7, so it is wisest to stick with 1.48 on 10.7 and earlier machines.
I should probably change the topmost line on that page to 10.8. |

Well, so far I haven't had any problems (knock on wood) with Calibre versions above 1.48. I don't use the device detection feature so I can't say whether I would have had problems with it. What is/was the graphics toolkit used for?

Well, I used Calibre 2.3 running on Mac OS 10.7.5 (Lion) and converted about 150 AZW books to EPUB without a problem yesterday and today. From what I understand, Mac OS 10.8 (Mountain Lion) was mainly a "clean up" release ala "Snow Leopard" (10.6). The major changes were held for Mac OS 10.9 (Mavericks) of which the minor updates were "Bret", "Bart", "Beau", and "Pappy".
