Automatically remove justification when auto adding book?
When I import an EPUB and it is right-justified I can set the "Look and Feel" to Justify "Left Align" and manually convert the EPUB to EPUB and it is sucessfully un-justified.
But how do I do this automatically when Adding a Book or "Automatic Adding" it from a folder? I have checked the "Automatically convert" option, but it is already EPUB so it doesn't get converted with my Look and Feel options. |

I don't see any option to force conversion. (2.29)
My EPUBs are not being converted to "EPUBs without justification" unless I manually do it. |

I already have the "Automatically Convert" checkboxes checked.
But since the input file is EPUB and the Preferences-Behaviour->Preferred output format is EPUB, it doesn't convert and therefore doesn't get rid of the justification. I have to convert manually and end up with an ORIGINAL_EPUB and EPUB (without justification!) but it just doesn't happen automatically when I click "Add Books" or put the EPUB into the "Automatic Adding Folder". I need it to be automatic. |

Automatic conversion does not convert rom same format to itself. If you need to do that, you have to do it manually.

So is there any other simple way to automate the reformatting of EPUBs when importing into Calibre so when they are served on the Content server to my E-readers they can be viewed with proper formatting?

well you could start buying your books from amazon in mobi/azw, and have calibre auto convert to epub (and tweak the justification in the process) whenever you add them.
As amazon is often the cheapest source, you may save a little money also ![]() Seems a daft requirement to me though. All printed books are justified nowadays |

Well, what if I wanted to change the margins on my EPUBs when adding them to Calibre. Could that be done automatically?
If it isn't 'daft' to do it manually, why can't calibre offer the option to do it automatically? |

IMHO Automatic anything is playing Russian Roulette. Calibre will not convert to my 'standard' (above). Indents and top/bottom margins are mutually exclusive. 30 seconds with the editor on the CSS and it is (usually) fixed my way. (Note: I frequently see other code things that offend my sensibilities and just have to clean those up. OCD is me ) |

" add books" does what the name implies- it adds a book to a library
"convert book" is a different operation. there IS probably a way to add and also to auto convert epub to epub via some clever script & use of command lines, ( i.e. in effect you write a macro to automate the sequence of commends) but it is not available to you as a simple "tick this box" option, as others have explained. many folks, me included - use the controls on their reader device / reader app to override publisher's choice of margins and justification- is that not a practical solution for you ?. what epub e-reader devices are you serving your books to , & have you checked their over-ride settings ? The Kobo Glo has the options to change margins and justification, but they don't work for all epubs (even with the libnickel patches) so I'd prefer to have it done automatically in calibre.
I don't think having the feature would hurt anyone (it doesn't have to be enabled by default), so I added it to the calibre feature request (bug) tracker. |

How the Kobo ereaders handles the text alignment depends on where it is and whether you are reading epubs or kepubs. The kepub reader will override all text alignment. This means that if you force ragged-right, things that had center or right will be forced to the left.
The epub reader handles it differently. It will override the text alignment set in the body tag or class, but not in the paragraph, heading and other tags. This means that unless the "normal" paragraph has the text alignment set in the tag or class, the book will probably retain the correct text alignment for the parts where the alignment is important in the formatting. The above is the reason I wouldn't trust this to automation. I usually remove any text alignment set to justify, and leave the rest alone. But, only after examining the changes carefully. And as you mention the margins, these are handled differently. The margin settings don't change or depend on the settings inside the books. Effectively, they are changing the page width, so whatever is set on the device is added to whatever is in the book. |
