Does anyone here at MR know of a place where someone could get a good (legal)varied assortment of jpeg pics of male and female headshots either for free or inexpensively? I want to build a collection for when I work with scrivener as a means ofvisualizing characters.

If you are using them solely for visualization, you could always download comps from the various paid services, like iStockphoto and the like. Ditto Google images--the copyright means you can't use it publicly, or for other commercial (paid or unpaid) purposes, etc. I don't think that even the most stringent copyright law would say that if you download a comp image, and it resides ONLY on your computer, in a folder, for your eyeballs only...I don't think that would infringe the copyrights of the image creator/rights holder.

FWIW. (I don't play a lawyer on TV, nor am I one in real life).

The basic idea of idea of using a photo to visualize a character has been around for ages. Back in the day it was pretty common to use illustrations clipped from magazines (or even mail order catalogs). No reason you couldn't scan some in for your own use.

I'm not a lawyer either, but I agree with Hitch that the (purely personal) use you've described shouldn't be a problem.

Perhaps you might like to try cribbing from the websites of some talent agencies?

They usually have a fairly consistently-formatted selection of headshots with a decent variety of "character types" and occasionally additional still photos and audio/video clips in costumes and such that might help you visualize stuff. (Plus, you might discover a favourite new actor whose work you can check out!)

For example, here's a Montreal-based talent agency that has male and female and child actors with extra photos and videos, and here's a Danish one that's also got "ordinary" scriptwriters and directors alongside their actors.

If this seems like the sort of thing that might be useful to you, there's a bunch more agencies listed via the ACTRA pages for Alberta and Montreal, and I'm sure it'd be easy to google for more.

I attempted to download a small image. It lets you do that. It does, however have a small watermark.

ADDED: Also, type in (for example) 'headshots free' on Google, and then view 'Images' - Everyone's there!

Doesn't Scrivener have a place to just drop an image into a Character Sketch sheet?

ADDED ADDED: I just tried it in Scrivener. Simply drag the image onto the Character Sketch sheet. I also own Storymill, and they have a special area, within the Character Sketch sheet, that is only for images. I dragged one there, too. No problem.
