Eye Strain - Kindle PW 1 vs Voyage
HI,
I was wondering if someone could help me. My eyes are sensitive to light and I have a PW 1 which works for me much better than a tablet. Now that the Voyage screen in flush with the bezel does that make light shine more 'up-ward' than before? I assume the contrast is much better so I should be able to read it at a lower light level in the dark, but does more light escape up-ward than the PW1. Not sure have I made myself clear here. Many thanks for any help on this. |

I have a Paperwhite 1 (and a Paperwhite 2) and a Voyage. I prefer the Voyage screen to the Paperwhite 1's screen, mostly because the light is more even, but it's a very small preference.
As far as the light shining in your eyes there's no difference. They both work in exactly the same way with the light pointing down at the screen from the light transferring coating on top. The screen and bezel being flush makes it a little bit nicer to use but it has no other effect. Really the reason I got the Voyage has more to do with it's reduced size and weight than anything to do with the screen. Barry |

I have the PW2 and I love it. I was using a Nexus 7 tablet which I had to always mess with the lighting. I have issues with my eyes and the light of the tablet have to be very low for me to be able to read more than 10 minutes on it. But the PW2 I find myself reading much more and enjoying to much more. I keep my lighting very low on the PW2 also.

I have a Paperwhite 1 waiting to go to my sister's friend. I have a new Paperwhite 2. And I have a Voyage I bought last year but didn't receive until February.
For me, the amaing change in Kindle ereaders was the Paperwhite 1. The Paperwhite 2 was a nice improvement in resolution and screen lighting. The Voyage is, for me, a modest step up from the Paperwhite 2. The screen is a little brighter and the contrast is a little higher but I enjoy reading both. For me, the size of the Voyage is not a plus. I'm more comfortable holding and reading the Paperwhite. I do like the button on the Voyage on the back. Kindle has done a great job hiding the power button on the Paperwhites. If you can't find a Voyage to try out, you can order one from Amazon and have thirty days to return it. For me, if I lose a Kindle the replacement would be a Paperwhite 2. |

I went from a PW1 to a Voyage. The screen is higher resolution, the lighting is more even, and the brightness and has a larger range. I did not have eye strain problems with the PW1, however, so cannot say for sure whether the better screen will help. Personally, I am very happy with the upgrade, and very much like the auto brightness feature, which is tweakable.

I have eye strain problems too. My mac monitor is set so dim it is practically off, and I've found an app that puts the colors to a very low sepia setting. I used to invert the colors and read with a black background (even though white letters were awful, the black background was soothing enough to make up for it).
I find the Voyage very easy to read on. I've never had a Paperwhite, though, so I can't compare there. But the high resolution on the Voyage is a great help, and the lighted screen (my last was a K4, unlighted) is not at all a problem for me, though I keep it set fairly low. Try one; I think you'll like it. |
