Unhappy PRS-650 takes 6 minutes to open, 2 minutes to save a note

I've had my PRS-650 for four-and-a-half years. It has gradually gotten slower and slower, but now it is at its worst.

When I power up my PRS-650, it takes 6 minutes before I see my home screen.

When I make an annotation -- even just a bookmark -- it takes a full 2 minutes to save. In the meantime, I can't do anything with the Reader.

Shutting down has always been the same quick speed -- takes about 10 seconds.

My internal memory is only 21% used (have about 270 books, 24 photos, 8 songs, 4 text memos, and 512 annotations).

I tried resetting (putting a pin in the reset hole) as per instructions in the owner's manual, but that has not made a difference.

Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, is there a solution?

Is there something you've recently put on there that maybe it doesn't like? The only time I had issues with powering up, I'd put a PDF on my PRS650 and it was so pokey to load. Once I removed the errant book, it was back to normal.

I finally set aside my PRS650 because the battery life was going downhill and bought a T1.

You could try just deleting some files to see if that makes any difference in case Hemmi's suggestion about it being a particular book/file that is causing the problem.

If that doesn't work, it sounds like you've done a soft reset (press the Reset hole with a small pin and after 5 seconds sliding the power switch to restart the reader), so the next step is to try a hard reset. This would wipe everything off your reader though, pretty much restores it to factory settings. So you'd need to make sure you have a back-up of your books first, and be aware you will need to reauthorise it with Adobe.

See the MobileRead Wiki for info on resetting your 650:

This problem has been going on for 6 mos. or so; I just didn't get around to enquiring about it until now. Before that, it took 2-and-a-half minutes to open and 30-60 seconds to save a bookmark or annotation.

Is there a way to tell the date when a particular ebook was transferred to the device?

Nevermind, I found my answer: Open a book on my device, press the "options" button, then choose "info" from the menu -- although this gave me a strange date for my most recently added book (04-08-2016).

For me, it happened when a wrong book was stored in my 650. By wrong book, I mean wrong formatting or coding or something. Once this book removed, everything else got back to normal.

Thank you for the response. That's something worth exploring, so I'll start with my most recently added items.

do it by removing half of the ones in question. then half of the remaining ones. repeat that process. doing one by one, unless you have very little to go through, would take forever, given that you would have to check the speed every time you connect and disconnect with the computer.

Can you not connect your reader to your computer using the USB cable and sort them by date in the file explorer to make it easier to check the dates they were added. If so that'd be a lot quicker and easier way of doing it rather than via the device.

Thumbs up

So simple but so brilliant. I never noticed that when I connect my device and open the Reader software, there is a "Date Added" column. And it's sortable, as you indicated.

Smile Problem Solved

I stumbled on the solution by accident. And I didn't have to delete any books from the device or from my library.

I prepared to message Sony Support about another issue. To replicate my issue so I could accurately describe it to Sony, I took the following steps. When I completed the steps, my PRS-650 was back to its original fast speeds.
  1. I connected my PRS-650 to my computer via the USB cable.
  2. I opened Reader (Sony's Reader software).
  3. I waited until the PRS-650 battery was fully charged (i.e., until screen said "charging complete").
  4. I did what I wanted to do in Reader (which was to export an annotation to .rtf)
  5. I ejected the PRS-650 from within Reader.
  6. I closed Reader.
  7. I disconnected the USB cable from the PRS-650.

I noticed that the PRS-650 opened to the main screen a lot more quickly than it had been doing.

The next time I turned on my PRS-650, it took 40 seconds to get to the main screen (not 6 minutes as it used to). I marked one of my books with a highlight, and it took 8 seconds (not 2 minutes as it used to).

During the past 24 hours, I have turned the PRS-650 off and on, and I have made multiple bookmarks and annotations. The speed has remained consistent.

So it seems that having the PRS-650 connected and charging its battery while Reader (Sony's software) is open is what did the trick. I guess the PRS-650 and Reader need to interact every so often. Most of my ebooks have been public domain (so they can be transferred to my device via calibre), which means I rarely had to open Reader during the past little while.

Good to know it's working as it should be again

Maybe the Reader software cleaned the database or something...

I have never even installed the Sony reader software on my computer and my 350 has never suffered any slowdowns. But perhaps as samhy said it cleaned something up in the database of your ereader.

Either way, nice one. Glad its working better for you now, however it worked.

you did mention in an earlier post about a file with a date in the future. i think that connecting with the sony reader program synced the date/time to match the time on the computer. maybe this was the fix it needed.

Glad it's working good again!

I've also never installed any Sony software on my computer and never had an issue.

Actually this didn't have an effect. On the device three of my books still show the date of 04-08-2016. When I connect my device to the computer and open Reader (Sony's software), those same three books still show 04-08-2016 as "Date Added."

But your post led me to look for a pattern with those three particular books, and I've now figured out why they all have that future date. I have a calibre plug-in called "Manage Sony x50 Reader Book List," which allows me to set which three books I want to appear on the device's main screen. The three books with the future date are the same three books I set for my main screen.

It seems the default behaviour is that the three books which appear on the device's main screen are the three books that were added most recently. Therefore, if I select older books for my main screen, the plug-in changes their "date added" to one year in the future so that they will always meet the parameter of being the most recently added books.

I also noticed that when, via the plug-in, I choose different book(s) to appear on my main screen, the previous book(s) revert back to their original "date added".
