Sleep Mode on Paperwhite
Is it possible to disable sleep mode on the Kindle Paperwhite NexGen?

Depends on what exactly you call 'sleep mode', and what exactly you want to achieve.
In general, while the technical answer is most likely yes, in practice, there's very few good reasons to actually *want* to do that (except for a few very specific use cases that have come up over the years, like using a Kindle to read sheet music or flight plans) ![]() |

I'm unable to wake my Kindle Paperwhite from sleep because I'm disabled, so I need it to stay awake.

That is indeed another one of those very specific use cases
![]() There's a button that does the trick in the KUAL helper extension ("PREVENT Screensaver") (which implies jailbreaking the device, cf. the Dev corner). On a vanilla device, there's a way to achieve the same thing by 'searching' for a specific string in the searchbar of the Homescreen (~ds). On a sidenote, this isn't a permanent change, if the device is rebooted, the screensavers will be enabled again. FYI, the default 'timeout' is 15min, if you want to know the exact timing to check whether this works ![]() Last edited by NiLuJe; 05-15-2014 at 11:23 AM. Depending on the nature of the disability, perhaps a cover that will wake the Kindle from sleep when it is opened would be a good alternative?

You could periodically touch the screen to get a word definition. That should keep it from going to sleep. On the old K1, I used to scroll the scrollwheel to keep it from going to sleep, but that isn't an option on the Paperwhite. You must be able to touch the screen, or you couldn't use the Paperwhite.

Thanks everyone for the information. I can't use the trick of touching the screen because I frequently fall asleep while I'm reading :-). I wish Amazon would have an option in the reader for setting the sleep-time limit or disabling it completely.

They do, it's just not documented
![]() The ~ds trick I mentioned should work on vanilla (K5) devices. |

I solved my problem by taking a strip of Velcro and sticking it to the lower right-hand side of the back of the Paperwhite. I then the stuck a magnet on the strip of Velcro. Now when it goes into sleep mode, I use my mouth stick to swing the magnet up and over the lower right-hand corner of the reader, which is where the switch is that turns it off and on. This works pretty well.
A side note is that Amazon made the screens of these devices with a texture that supposedly feels more like paper. This causes the mouth stick and styluses to not make good contact with the screen. The result of this is that you have to tap the screen several times to get it to turn the page or use any of the other features of the reader. Seems to me that if a person wanted the feel of paper they would be reading a paper book. Are you listening Amazon? |
