Calibre and Kobo
Can one send books to a new Kobo reader from calibre, without using any of the Kobo add-ons - drivers, plugins.
My neighbour, a non-English speaking +70 year old, got caught up in the IOS problems last year and he stopped using calibre. He likes calibre but he doesn't want a repeat of the IOS problems. His granddaughter has suggested she buy him a Kobo. BR Last edited by BetterRed; 05-22-2015 at 07:51 PM. |

The main driver for Kobo's is included in the calibre release. There is no need to install the extended driver or the Utilities plugin.
You could configure calibre to use the connect to folder option to interface with Kobo but you would not get all the integration between the two. Frankly the Kobo environment is a lot more open than the Apple environment; I don't forsee the same issues as have occurred with the IOS interface. |

@PeterT - thanks - the perception of my neighbour and his grand daughter, is that the problems he experienced with his IPad & calibre started when the developer of the PI changed.
Will the built-in driver allow him to send the books, I'm not sure he's interested in much integration, he just wants to read his news/magazines and books in Russian. He doesn't keep things on his IPad once he's read it - I imagine it would be the same with a Kobo. His grand daughter is an IT project manager in retail supply chain/logistics, Apple IOS dominates the 'portable terminal' end of that sector. She's also read the Kobo related forum and threads at MR and elsewhere - my impression is that she's underwhelmed ![]() I've suggested they get a Kindle, they seem to have fewer hassles. BR |

The issues with the iPad and calibre are probably due to the recent IOS upgrade that appears to have changed the security model, preventing third party tools the access they used to have.
The built in driver will allow him to send content to the Kobo, as well as delete it, and to place it on shelves. |

Thanks Peter - knowing Oleg he won't bother with more than one shelf unless he has to, I've seen his shed and his dead tree 'library'
![]() You're may be right about IOSRA etc. But other folks perceptions are their reality, and my Russian ain't Boris enough to argue with the two of them ![]() BR |

Support for Kobo via Calibra is actually better than it is for Kindles. For one thing, collections can be created via Calibra without the need to jailbreak.

@BetterRed: Do they specifically want an e-ink device? I ask because he is coming from Apple, which is LED. If LED is important or even acceptable, you might suggest a Google Nexus 7. It is natively supported by calibre (MTP). The two models add up to 1/3 of CC's installed base, so I can assume that it is very popular with readers. Yes, Google no longer sells it but Acer and Amazon do.
Note that I am not suggesting that he use CC. It could easily be overkill, and in any event the Russian translation is only around 40% complete. |

![]() His friend had a Nook 'passed on to him', that's what he's taken with, especially for reading books. So yes, an e-ink device is definitely what they want. BR |
