Hello

Hello!

I've been lurking here for a while, but finally got around to registering.

I started reading e-books because I got hooked on the Grantville Gazette (an e-zine available through Baen). I was reading on a Palm Zire, but decided that I wanted something with a larger screen and which I could read in sunlight, so I bought a Sony PRS-500 on eBay in February.

Since then I've downloaded books from Baen, Fictionwise, and MobileRead (thank you Harry for uploading the D'Artagnan Romances!) and a few from the Sony store (redeeming a $50 intro credit).

Most of my book purchases now are eBooks, but at least half my reading is still paper because I use the public library frequently and I still enjoy browsing used book sales

Glad you finally signed on.

Yeah, I'm still a regular public library visitor as well. It's the best way to get my hands on series books when the publisher only turns the 3rd or 4th book into an ebook. It's taking me forever to get through the Vorkosigan saga by Lois McMaster Bujold because I'm getting interlibrary loans from all over the state of Georgia.

Oh, and you have the right name to be J.A.D.E.D.!

Hello Julia. I purchased my Kindle in mid-February. I keep a list of each book I read, so I can look at my list and see that I've read 26 books on the Kindle and 28 in paper since. I have a huge stack of TBR books here in the house and I'm an active book swapper, which means I need to read and mail a certain number of paper books each month. I'm using my Kindle as a substitute for hardback books I would have gotten from the library and for those classics that I want to read and should have read, but never got around to. Well, not entirely true, since I'm satisfying my SFF itch with books from Baen, Charles Stross, and Steve Jordan. Since you like SF, check out Steve's books at http://www.stevejordanbooks.com/

Hi Everyone... since there seems to be newbies posting here, thought I would "join the club". I don't have an e reader yet, still trying to decide on one. I am leading towards Sony. But my main area of confusion is this... I understand that you download books to the reader or alternate memory device, but how do you purchase them? Do you have to have internet access and a credit card? I have purchased music online before, and downloaded them onto my Zune. Is the book purchase similar? Thanks.

That's right - you buy them online and download to your reading device.

You realise the entire Mikes series is available in ebook form from www.baen.com websubscriptions. I think u can buy them in the group books (3 books in one) aswell.

I have them as ebooks myself (what sci-fi collection could be complete without them?) and use to have them in soft/hard cover (until that unfortunate incident with the long-term storage company. I forgot I had long-term storage. I mean u pay ahead and then u change addresses and you think its only been a few months hasn't it?.. and...and... *sigh* ).

Why I love ebooks. so easy to move your libary with you (or back it up offsite).

I'm trying to avoid purchasing books or ebooks. Whenever possible, I use the public library to fill in the blanks instead of buying a book I'll probably only read once. I don't feel so bad about only reading a book once if it was free or returnable.

You forgot you had long-term storage? Oh no! Did they get rid of your books?

Alas it was both.

They 'recovered' the cost of storage (after failing to get a response from me at my old address) and yes, sold everything.

Had close to 1000 books I think. 6 bookcases. 6 shelves. 25-30 books per shelf. sounds about right. Before I moved I had it set up in a spare room with a sofa bed. So the room did triple duty as computer room/library/guest room.... though the guest was a bit of a squeeze.

B***R. just spotted my typo from earlier. Meant 'miles' series (as in Vorkosigan)... not 'mike' - lol
