Number column limited to 4 digits?

The book number column to the left of the main Calibre display is fixed-width (you cannot use the mouse to make it wider) and appears limited to 4 digits.

Book numbers beyond 9,999 are truncated... e.g. for books 10,000 to 10,099, "100…" is displayed... for books 10,100 to 10,199, "101…" is displayed, etc.

With my settings (default?) mousing over doesn't display the actual numbers either.

Any idea how I could fix or work around this issue?

Seen on debian linux (Jessie aka "testing").

Thanks,

CJ

I wonder if it is font issue? If so playing around with the fonts used by Calibre might help. On my Windows install of Calibre I can certainly see 5 digits. However I agree that it is not manually resizable.

Hmm... wonder what makes you suspect fonts? As far as I know, the font used by the gui, is set by the gui.. not by Calibre (?)

I didn't mention it in my opening post, but I also noticed that the last digit is sometimes partly truncated (a couple of pixels, perhaps..) for books in the 1,000-9,999 range.. So this may have something to do with global font settings on this system...

All the same, I have other linux-based environments on this laptop. I may even have one where I installed Calibre for testing purposes. When I get a chance I'll boot into one of them and see if I have the same issue...

Thanks,

CJ

Font ARE set in Preferences:Look and Feel

You CAN set the Face and Size
You CAN adjust the line height (common use is negative from the default)

You can set the font Calibre uses under Preferences->Interface->Look and Feel. Whether the defauly is inherited from the system I have no idea.

I am suspecting fonts as that field seems to be auto-resizing on my system to show the maximum number of characters required for the library in use.

Ran some quick "tests" with other fonts...

I use Microsoft's Verdana everywhere to get that consistent look'n feel across applications and the problem crops up when I specify a fontsize of less than 8pts in Calibre's preferences.

I switched to Arial (~Helvetica) and also Tahoma (a narrow version of Verdana) and the problem does not occur.

The problem now is that I want to stick with Verdana everywhere decision (most legible font at small sizes on low-res devices such as computer screens) and 8pts is a tad too large — does not let me display enough data on Calibre's main screen.

This shouldn't happen... especially with such a widely-used font as Verdana.

Not sure what the procedure is but I guess I should report this as a Calibre bug...?

Thanks,

CJ

Hummmm, on windows 8.1 using desktop mode the number of the book is larger than I would like. It shows a six digit number and room for another three digits. I would love to be able to make it narrower.

Quick update:

The problem magically went away after I had to switch from the free open-source "nouveau" driver to the "nvidia" proprietary one (for reasons unrelated to calibre).

I launched calibre after rebooting... and calibre was using oversized fonts that looked more like 14pts than my preferred 8pts. I proceeded to reduce my default calibre font to 6pts (!) under Preferences→Look&Feel (?) and after a restart all the fonts were the "right" size again (except perhaps for the metadata blurb to the right of the calibre display.. somehow a slightly larger font is used)...

So I thought... hmm... let's have a look at the books in the 10000+ range.. and lo' n'behold.. all five columns are now correctly displayed.

Since it looks as if this issue is more of a KDE/Qt problem (or running KDE/Qt based applications on an otherwise Gnome/GTK environment more like..) than anything to do with calibre... I'll leave well alone and not pursue this further.
