Multiple filter options

Hello

Would it be possible to use different filter-options? That way I could choose a fandom and then a tag or character in fanfiction fx. Or a tag and an author fx.

Hope it makes sense.

Two solutions exist:
  1. Long-press on an item (a tag or any other item in some category) until CC shows a dialog asking how you want to search: matching or not matching. Once you choose the grouping drawer will be filtered in the same way that calibre filters the tag browser when using a virtual library.
  2. Enter whatever search you want into the search box. After the scan completes the grouping drawer will be filtered as described above.
In both cases the filtered view of the grouping drawer will remain until you clear the search box by tapping in it.

Thank you so much, I didn't know that.

You've just saved me either server-options or windows tablet I'll now just be considering an ebook-reader.

This is so cool! Is there any way to add another NOT? (Yes Fiction AND not Mystery AND not Science Fiction).

Most of my fiction books are one of these two categories. Right now I'm trying to tag the 'nots' in Calibre, but there are times I want to do other searches (mysteries not by Agatha Christie or Dorothy Sayers).

The long-press filtering can do "x and y" or "not x and y". To do something more complicated for the first expression (the "x") you must manually enter the expression into the search box and let CC do a scan. For example, in theory you could enter the following into the search box
Code:
not tags:mystery and not "tags:science fiction"
I say "in theory" because I discovered a bug in "not" processing that makes the above not work. I will release a fix in a week or so. In the meantime you could enter the following equivalent expression (see de Morgan's theorem for why it is equivalent)
Code:
not (tags:mystery or "tags:science fiction")

It would be really need, if there was an opportunity to save a search, much like in Calibre

There isn't enough demand to justify the significant amount work to store, retrieve, and manage saved searches. What I can do is add some copy/paste buttons to the search box. With those you can use a clipboard manager (I am testing with Clip Stack), evernote, or some other note app to store (and edit) search strings; copy them to the clipboard; and paste them into the search box. CC's "copy" button copies the current search to the clipboard so you can save it in whatever app you choose.

The search edit box will look like this:

Name:	Clipboard01.jpg
Views:	308
Size:	13.4 KB
ID:	138152

It is worth noting that CC's search string syntax is very close to but not the same as calibre's. The biggest difference is the placement of the leading " in match specifications. In calibre it looks like category:="value"; the leading quote is after the equals sign. In CC it looks like category:"=value"; the leading quote is before the equals sign.

Because you use evernote and because they are so close, you could copy the searches from calibre to evernote on your desktop, make the small edits, then use them in CC by copying them from Android evernote to the clipboard.

That would be pretty cool, and I think it would be easier to manage, if you have some searches you use a lot.

I wasn't quite accurate here. Calibre's tag browser generates searches with the same syntax that CC uses, category:"=value". Calibre also accepts category:="value", which CC does not. As such, calibre searches that use the first syntax should work without change in CC (I hope), as long as CC supports the expression kind. Example: CC does not support the count operator such as tags:#>2.

I can already do a cut and paste from the search box - is what you are showing here different?

Same idea but not the same. The problem is that some devices do not show the cut/copy action bar. For example, my Nexus 5 running lollipop 5.1 does not, but my N7 also running lollipop 5.1 does, both running the same version of CC. My HTC Sensation running 4.0.3 does, but in a quite different way. My Galaxy Nexus does not. And so on.

I want to be sure that the functions are there and convenient to use.

I just tried my Nexus 5 still on Kitkat and it looks like it's not there, but it's actually a white on white problem. On yours, tap where you think the text for copy should be and it should do it.

I managed to get a screen print after long pressing on where 'select all' should be.

Thanks for the investigation. It is good to know that they are really there, but I can see the FAQ entry: Poke around on white space until you find the hidden command.

I am going to leave my buttons. Not only are they easier to see but in this specific situation they are easier to use. The copy button copies the entire search string without needing to select it first. The paste button replaces the entire search, again without needing to select it. The idea is that one can grab a working search and save it somewhere, or that one can get a saved working search and easily paste it into the box.

Well I thought you might want to fix it, but if you'd rather have that FAQ entry, I like it!
