Stopped booting, so I soldered up a serial connection.

Replace the eMMC (flash memory) chip.
Those memory error messages mean just what they say.

We have a thread here on how-to do the memory chip change, but if you don't have access to a hot air, SMD re-work station and tools;
You now have a used PW2 display for sale.

Interesting. Wonder how common eMMC failure is on e-ink readers.

I've seen plenty of NAND failures on flash drives (PortableApps can be quite heavy on those). Haven't seen one on a mobile device until now. Makes me appreciate the internal microSD slot on the Kobo.

The recovery process, after the hardware replacement, is only slightly more complex than recovering from "Erase All".

And the backup script I posted creates backups of all the required items (if run prior to the failure of course - so run it now and keep the set of files it creates).

Nah, way beyond my skill set. Simpler to just buy a new device (and I've got some spares at the moment).
