New dictionary and Gen3
I've not bought a new English dictionary in almost 30 years, so I thought that it was about time that I updated mine. Consequently I've just bought the new 10th edition of Chambers dictionary from MobiPocket.
First impressions are that it works very well indeed. On the Mobi desktop reader it lets you do word searches (including wildcard searches) - that will be my main use of it. On the Gen3 the "Lookup" facility works pretty well, and seems to ignore punctuation (which is good). I've tried it with a few of the more obscure words from Sherlock Holmes (eg "minatory", "prognathous", "gasogene") and it found them all. Seems to deal with inflected forms reasonably well. eg "bespoke" offered me both "bespoke" and "bespeak", "surmises" found "surmise", "appreciating" found "appreciate". All in all, a good buy. |

Harry, I wish I had a dictionary lookup function on my Sony Reader. I love to read English books, but as a non-native speaker, sometimes I encounter words I haven't heard before... in which case it would be fantastic if I could quickly look'em up. Oh well.

I was rather skeptical about the use of the dictionary at first, but now I can see myself using it a fair amount. The word "lookup" interface works pretty well (you select "lookup mode" from the menu, and the naavigation keys move you a word at a time up, down, left, right across the page); a "search" function would be nice, like the desktop reader has, but the dictionary is certainly useful without it.

I would really like to be able to program one of the volume buttons to get into lookup mode. Or be able to move the entry in the menu so it is the first one. The entries I select most often is "Lookup Mode" and "Back to Library".

Which one did you buy Harry? Because there are multiple choices on MobiPocket.com

The Chambers Unabridged 10th Edition. Cost $50. I'm very happy with it indeed.

Thanks Harry. How did you choose between all those choices? Or can't you use all of them on the Cybook in order to use the lookup function.
I'm a little bit lost here. ![]() |

The Chambers appears to be the most comprehensive English dictionary that Mobi sell. As you say, there is a huge range! I was torn between the Chambers and Concise Oxford, but in the end went for the Chambers.
It may not be the right choice for someone for whom English is not a first language, but I like it a lot. |

But do they all work with the Cybook's lookup function?

Great! Maybe it's time to order myself a Cybook G3. I really like this lookup function because I find quite some words in my books that I don't understand and this will help a lot.
Or do I just need to give myself (read "girlfriend") a reason to buy one. :P EDIT: Do you happen know if the Hanlin V3 has this function as well? Last edited by diabloNL; 11-26-2007 at 12:51 PM. |

You can see how it works with the Mobi desktop reader, and the sample downloads of the dictionaries (the sample normally only has words starting with "A", or something like that). It's a slightly different user interface on the Gen3, but the basic functionality is the same.
On the desktop reader you can just right click on a word and select "lookup" from the popup menu; on the Gen3 you choose "Lookup" from the menu, and then move a highlight around the page which highlights one word at a time, and moves left, right, up, and down. |

Thanks Harry. I'm trying to show my girlfriend how incredible useful the Sony Reader would be for her because she travels a lot. Now she's dragging a lot of books with her in her suitcase. Also, every now and then she needs to buy a new closet to store her books and that means that I need to go to Ikea. I don't know if you know what kind of store Ikea is but for me it's a real nightmare to go there.
