Vote for a "translatedFrom" tag
Hi,
Weird: we have metadata to describe which painter worked on the cover of our ebook, but nothing to tell the original language it is from. If you believe your ebooks would be better organized by having a tag to tell from which language they have been translated from... Dublin Core is missing a lot of tags that would enhance EPUBs. Personally, I am far more interested in proper, standardized and adopted support for series, which has far wider application.
I do agree with you that some variant of "original language" is needed, but TBH it doesn't affect me either way... beyond the fact that the supposed standards body is a lackadaisical group of, ehm, "oblivious" morons. |

and original title.
In paper books, at least in Spanish, the original title almost always figures in the copyright page, not always the language. |

I just looked at four translated books, they each have something like this on the copyright page
Originally published as Perlmanns Schweigen in German, in Germany, in 1995, by Albrecht Knaus The others were translations of French and Russian. I also looked at a couple of French translations of English language books, they are similar. DC is used for audio and visual works etc, so getting language into it might be hard. Whats needed is a book-industry XMP 'standard' - good luck with that in the age of walled garden mazes. BR |

We could just create our own standard and hope it eventually gets enough use that it becomes a de facto standard that everybody has to support. As long as non-compliant readers ignore it properly, you're golden.
In fact, IIRC, the EPUB 3 spec has this weird scheme where you can reference arbitrary metadata from external standards. Although I swear every time I have to waste two lines of XML just to insert an ISBN, the syntax (awkward as it may be) theoretically lets you insert just about any arbitrary metadata you might want, e.g. Code:
<dc:language id="foo">en-US</dc:language> <meta refines="foo" property="original-language" scheme="mobileread:stuffdcforgot">martian-Mars</meta> |

Hi guys,
I got an answer from one person of the board at Dublin Core who advised me to use the extension of the framework to create our own set of tag as dgatwood suggested. Nevertheless, I feel, this should be enhanced at the IDPF level (the epub standardization group)... let's poll this for epub4 ![]() Thanks guys. Regards François |
