Unhappy Selecting a range of books

I am having trouble selecting a range of books in Calibre.

As per the help: "Keep the Shift key pressed and click on the starting and ending book of a range of books you want selected."

This does not seem to work. I can select books by using the CTRL key but not the SHIFT key. Any help would be appreciated.

Calibre uses standard selection semantics. Click on the first book in the range, then press the shift key and click on the last book. Same interface that apps like Windows Explorer use.

Thanks for your reply Harry. I understand what you are saying and am very familiar with Windows. What I am saying is that that doesn't work on my computer. It used to but, doesn't now for some reason. I am running Vista 64bit and Calibre 64bit.

Kind of a mystery here!

Are you sure that you don't have the shift key pressed when you click the start of the range? You need to select the first book without any keys pressed, THEN press and hold the shift key, and THEN click on the end of the range with the shift key pressed.

I first select the starting book, then depress and hold the SHIFT key, then select the last book in the range. Calibre immediately selects only the one book I last clicked on. I was wondering if some option somewhere might have been inadvertently been changed by me and my fat fingers?

I don't know about your keyboard, but mine has 2 Shift keys. Have you tried the 'other one'. Failing that how about that old favourite 'Have you tried rebooting?'

Can you select a range using JUST the keyboard?

select first book
hold shift, use arrow (up or down)
let up on the shift key

Keyboards do go bad/get cat hair and stuff under the keys

What brand Mouse? Wired or cordless?
Graphics Tablet attached?
Any other HID attached?

My cure - for budgie seed husks in the works - pull or lever off the shift key, remove whatever is under and give kb a good upside down shake. Replace key. Works every time, for any problem key

Tried both SHIFT keys. As far as rebooting, we are talking about windows! It has to be frequently rebooted!

Arrow keys works just fine! Thank you. The mouse is wired nothing exotic attached. Only thing attached is the keyboard, printer and mouse. BTW, there is nothing wrong with either of the SHIFT keys.

Very odd indeed! Does range selection using the mouse work in Windows Explorer?

Range selection works with everything except Calibre! That's why I wondered if I accidentally changed something in Caliber.

@K8HW - long shot - try downloading and installing calibre portable - it won't interfere with existing install, or use existing configuration data

If portable works, then something has broken in the 64bit install or the configuration folders - I cannot imagine what.

So, if portable works... I would download and install the 32bit version. It can coexist with the 64 bit, and it will use the existing configuration and libraries. If that works then its presumably something in the 64bit install - you could try doing a Repair on it or a Reinstall via uninstall/install.

If 32bit doesn't work then its presumably something in the configuration data . . . or the library itself, surely not . . . I'll wait until you get back to us before further making suggestions.

If Portable doesn't work - then I'm stumped.

BR

I do have a copy of Calibre on a flash drive. I get the same thing with that. Back to the drawing board!
