Calibre dowload problem?

Hi
I downloaded Calibre 64bit again because the original version could not finish initiating the user interface, But this download took over 5 minutes - whereas I recall it originally took only about 2 minutes.
Then later on Norton Power Eraser came up to tell me that there was significant outbound activity that was questionable. So I ran NPE and it stopped at Calibre.
Has anyone else had problems like this? Any suggestions?
Thank you
Joe

Where (What URL) did you download from?
Norton Friends do not let friends do Norton (Had a bad Yellow box experience)

The best thing you could do for your computer is uninstall Norton.

The download speed is probably just a matter of download speed. What is the downloaded filesize?

As for it freezing -- maybe that is Norton, assuming calibre is a virus just because it connects to the internet. No kidding, so do browsers.

calibre also checks for updates.

I agree with theducks and JSWolf -- Norton is not a very good choice for an antivirus.
Make sure calibre is not being blocked by Norton -- preferably uninstall and replace with any of several good, free antiviruses, or at least make sure calibre is on the exceptions list.

Roger I understand that.
Since then I have tries downloading from the three sites indicated. And each time sometimes on the first but usually on the second time I try to run Calibre, it does not get past Initializing User Interface.
At this time I am stumped.
I even removed Norton, downloaded again and the same thing happened.
In fact it did it again just now. I then get a message Calibre is not responding.

There have been recent reports like this from windows users running 64 bit calibre. Often changing to the 32 bit version fixes it.

Kovid has made a change that will be in the next release that *might* help, but given that none of us can make it happen, no one yet knows for sure.

I also have sporadic problems with getting past the "Initializing user interface" portion of the splash screen on 32-bit calibre.

https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=259312

Killing the calibre process and relaunching usually gets it to go, though. Until the changes Kovid made to address this (hopefully ) are released, I suggest disabling the splash screen. When launching calibre in debug mode via command line (calibre-debug -g), I didn't experience the same hanging problems.

The same happens still. I still have Calibre on my HDD but it will not run - gets hung up on "Int user Interface".

Let me get this right:
The Installer ran without error.

This issue happens when you try and Start Calibre?

(in your case this is always)
http://manual.calibre-ebook.com/faq....s-occasionally

you could, as a test:
Rename the Calibre config folder

If things fly, you have something corrupted in one of the configs

Get that splash screen disabled.

Try launching from the command-line:
Code:
calibre
Try launching in gui debug mode via command-line:
Code:
calibre-debug -g
If you get it to go; disable the splash screen in the preferences.

If worse comes to worse ... find the line:
Code:
"show_splash_screen": true,
and change it to:
Code:
"show_splash_screen": false,
in the %APPDATA%\calibre\gui.json file.

Hi; I was at my daughter's yesterday. She has the same processor as I do, and has Norton on it.
She does have Calibre and it works fine. So therefore there is something with my computer.
I tried the command line prompt as you suggested - the same thing happened.
I tried the calibre debg with --g; nothing happened.
