8.3 is out
iOS 8.3 was released earlier today. A bunch of fixes this time around.
Here's a full list on Ars: http://arstechnica.com/apple/2015/04...erything-else/ |

Yes, and AGAIN my iPad downloaded the update behind my back. I hope that's why it's been behaving strangely and draining battery at a worrying speed lately. I need to go in search of that setting AGAIN and keep it from doing that next time, and write it down somewhere because the setting is obviously changed, presumably after each new iOS update. In fact I need to make a list of the settings that are messed up and need to be fixed after each update. Sigh.

Yep, I hate having to figure out what settings get changed after an update. PITA. It turned off the use WiFi for phone calls option on my iPhone 6 Plus. Not sure what else. This update looks like mostly bug fixes for bugs which I never encountered. It looks like a total waste of time to have updated, but I did not want the constant harassment of reminders to update, so I did it.
They also released the iOS 10.10.3 update and it looks like a waste of time too, especially that new POS Photos app. What a crock to replace Aperture with an even suckier app with far fewer features. I'll won't use their crappy iPhotos, Aperture, or this new one, so I hope they allow us to delete the apps altogether some day, but I'm not holding my breath. |

I upgraded my iPad 3 to IOS 8.3 and now Calibre will not connect with Marvin.
My iPad mini, running 8.2, is not upgraded and Marvin can still connect to Calibre. The mini will not be upgraded ![]() |

I bought my iPad Mini back in 2013 to replace my wonky Nook ST. Its primary purpose is to be an eReader, not an all-purpose tablet.
I have resisted the urge to upgrade, and am running older versions of several applications: iOS 7.1 iTunes 11.1 calibre 1.4 Marvin 2.75 iOS Reader Applications 1.4.1 Marvin XD 1.2.2 Very happy to say that ALL the apps work well together with functionally that meets my needs. I plan to stick to the adage: if it ain't broke don't fix it! ![]() |

Running an older iOS is okay as long as your apps will still run under it. I noticed that some of my newer apps require iOS 8.x or greater to run, some of the older ones require 7.x or greater, etc. If all of your current apps still run, and you are happy with whatever iOS version you are running, then there is really little incentive to upgrade. iOS upgrades tend to slow down older iDevices and they typically take up more storage space.

I updated the ios as well and can no longer connect to Calibre via Marvin...it shows the Marvin logo, greyed out, for a moment then it disappears...sigh...guess we'll just have to be patient while a "fix" is made to correct this.

I suppose all apps are working. Marvin also works, I can transfer books using Dropbox, same way as in Bluefire.
It is only the very convenient link to Calibre that doesn't work. I prefer Marvin for these reasons: You can arrange to have a translation dictionary, very convenient. I have found a font and background that really pleases me. You can transfer Calibre Metadata to Marvin together with the book. |

As far as I know, no one is working on a fix, so it is quite possible that there will never be one.

The last time this happened, when IOS 8 came out, it took several months for a fix, and that was eventually done by......me. At the time there did not seemed to be anyone else able or willing. And this time I have not got the time to investigate and try to fix the comms (again). So, I would not assume a fix will ever be made, and the window for downgrading to 8.2 will be closed by Apple soon.

I noticed a few of my apps have upgrades fixing bugs that appeared with 8.3. I'll wait a week or so before I upgrade the OS and the apps.

I'll wait a while, hoping for a fix as I do like Marvin and its' easy connection to Calibre but if worse comes to worse and there is no fix I'll likely delete the Marvin app, especially as it seems the owner no longer has interest in keeping it up to date, etc. and move on to another ereader app.
I've used a variety in the past and if the iphone reader offered a bit more in the way of customizing the backgrounds, page turning effects, etc. I'd stick with it as it does a great job of categorizing the books into their series format using metadata I suppose. |
