CSS being ignored in generated catalogue

I have generated an AZW3 catalogue for my Kindle, but I have some issues with the formatting. I had a look at it with the Calibre editor, and the CSS doesn't seem to be being applied properly. The CSS for p.line_item looks like this:
.line_item {
clear: both;
display: block;
font-family: monospace;
text-align: left;
text-indent: -2em;
margin: 0 0 0 2em;
}
The actual text is in the normal font, and when the line is wrapped the second part of the line is not indented. The editor's "Live CSS" shows the computed final styling as this:
font-family: serif;
font-size: 18px
line-height: 21px
page-break-inside: avoid
text-align: left
text-indent: -28px
The font-family and margin-left settings are being ignored. Similarly, the left margin setting for p.series is ignored.

Can anyone tell me what's going on here?

Just to be clear: Your are trying to do a hanging indent?

IIRC Side margins on a K are one of those things that the 'We know best' rulers have taken over (just like the minimum white space (margin setting ) on the edge. )
Unlike EPUB, AZW3 is their spec. So they can do exactly what they want and not be in non-compliance.

Curses. I have however fiddled about and found a set of magic numbers for the indents that (sort-of) work for me. Glad to hear it's not just me going mad...

Thanks!
