Smart punctuation/quotation and languages

Hi everyone,

Is it possible to make the smart punctation, in particular, the setting of the quotations, language-dependent?

When I use smart punctuation, the English manner of setting quotations is applied even if the language of the epub is French or German, which set quotations differently.

It's certainly possible, but it would require somebody else to write the code for it, since I am not fluent in those languages.

Actually, such a smart-smart-punctuation scheme should work using local and not language. There are differences within the same language (e.g. American English vs. British English, ...). Doing it right is a complex task.

As an intermediate step, an option to select the quotation marks that are used in the smart punctuation could solve most of the problem. LibreOffice, for instance, also uses some kind of smart punctuation and provides an option that enables a user to select the kind of quotation marks, apostrophes and the like that should be used.
