How the wikipedia-feature works in detail (PW)?
Hello community,
for security purposes i want to allow the kindle PW only to establish a minimum of internet connections. During reading the PW offers three tabs, if you click on a certain word: dictionary, x-ray and wikipedia. Which ip-addresses (or other ports) should remain unblocked so that the wikipedia-feature is still working properly? ![]() Kind regards |

Port 80, which is the default port for all web activity, which won't restrict anything.

I have already blocked all sites except of http://en.m.wikipedia.org/ and via the beta-browser only wikipedia is accessible. Unfortunately the wikipedia reading-feature doesn't work anymore. The PW seems to take his data from other wikisources / -sites. Do you have (or someone else) any idea where the summary information is taken from? Kind regards! ![]() Last edited by reader13498; 04-10-2015 at 04:35 PM. |

No idea. If you look at the location bar when viewing it in a regular browser, you should be able to find it.

OP, how about allowing the full wikipedia.org instead of just http://en.m.wikipedia.org/ Shari |

I said to try it in a regular browser. There is no reason to think that the Kindle uses anything different than the normal wikipedia interface. Do you really think that wikipedia gave them a special interface?

In fact, the ACX used to view Wikipedia lookups inside the book is proxied through Amazon, which I believe qualifies as a special interface.
![]() Since 3G Kindles are restricted to interacting with the Kindle Store/Cloud, Wikipedia lookups, Translate, and social media sharing, Amazon has proxied all those services and restricted their 3G network from contacting non-Amazon internet locations --which seals the potential holes in their 3G. It also means they are the real source for all those features -- no matter what one might have assumed. Blocking Amazon will block the Wikipedia lookup as well. No exceptions. There is a hack, AcXE - ACX Enabler which allows one to install custom ACXs, including the sample Google Translate ACX in the same thread. @reader13498, If you wrote a Wikipedia ACX which did Wikipedia lookups, that would do exactly what you desire. I can't think of any other feasible solution ![]() Moderator Notice
Also note: this question is hacking related, and thus belongs in our Kindle Developers Corner subforum. I've moved this thread to the appropriate location. ![]() Last edited by eschwartz; 04-14-2015 at 10:04 AM. |

Well, I did say "if". If for watever reason you can't or won't, then that kind of stinks because I don't know of any other way to keep Wikipedia lookups.
![]() You could *try* asking the AcXE author. |
