Size change after conversion

Could someone tell me what happens when I do this:

Take and epub of size 0.8 mB and convert to htmlz.
Delete the epub.
Convert the htmlz to epub.
Size is now 0.2 mB.

Same number of pages, no apparent content loss, just a smaller file size on disc.

My question is: What is being changed that makes the file size smaller?

Embedded fonts being removed?

Why not open the two ePubs with a zip tool (or the calibre Unpack tool) and take a look at what is included in each one.

@gsparks2 - the book editor has a compare feature that might give you a clue

EPUB files are rebadged zips files, so it could be due to different compression settings.

It could also be that your original epub is full of superflous crud. Try running it through the Modify PI - these are the settings I use when I'm feeling ruthless

'U' for Unpack (was T before the Editor was added) allows um-packaging (and possible repackaging if you know what you are doing)

Allows you to inspect the pieces without the chance any other changes.
