Navigation in e-readers
Hey guys,
Wondering what your thoughts are on the following: [Image violates guidelines for size - MODERATOR] Original Image Link http://i.imgur.com/z4H6uJQ.jpg Edit: Image URL Edit 2 (20th March 2015): Video Physical Book vs E-Reader (4 reading scenarios) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkEGsDvWLjk This thread is for discussion of navigation in e-readers and how it could be improved. I am not advocating a mass return to paperback, apologies for any confusion! Last edited by HarryHutton; 03-20-2015 at 08:14 AM. |

The second method is extremely degraded in effectiveness for people who work with their hands and develop callouses. It would also be harder for people with motor control problems.

"considerable cognitive effort"? Really? It isn't that hard to use the menus on an ereader.

When I forgot to put a bookmark inside my book, I have to read it again from the beginning. My cognitive powers can never remember where I left. But with electronic book readers, the device remembers for me!

Problems with the second one:
Bookmarks fall out when fumbled Paper cuts Pages mold in high humidity Pages yellow and become fragile over time Overflows available shelf space or overloads floor support |

For the purposes (forward page, back page) that can be accomplished by the control patterns shown for the physical book (right picture), the eReader (left picture) has almost the exact same control pattern. At least my Kobo Glo does.
The physical book is easier to go to a specific page, but not necessarily a specific chapter. The physical book has no search function, and highlighting/notes requires additional equipment. And, of course, the physical book is only that, the eReader can contain multiple eBooks. All in all, this is a misleading analogy. |

My erearder has page turn buttons -- well labeled, and right at my thumb. If I do need a menu, that button is right next to the page turn buttons.

Oh, and when I need to jump ahead to page 218 I can jump directly there. I don't need to watch page numbers go by until I get close.

Would it be possible to post the image in an acceptable size? Otherwise except for the people who saw it before it was deleted we don't know what the thread is about.

The second one needs to make it clear that there is no search function at all apart from laboriously reading the entire book; that to read any other books, one needs to go to one's physical bookcase, or to a bricks 'n' mortar store, or to the library to obtain them; that to change the brightness one needs to adjust external lighting, possibly getting up to do so; that the font, font size, line spacing, margins cannot be changed at all; that to do a dictionary lookup one needs a separate book at hand; etc, etc, etc.

![]() The secret is, that pbooks are awesome because they don't burden our puny minds with options... options might confuse us. Or didn't you catch that "cognitive effort" part? ![]() After all, no one really reads books, they merely skim them for whatever necessary information they need to write a book report, then retreat to the safety of television/football. |
