Importing books from the mobile?

So, I'm sitting here at an SF con, listening to the Hugo award nominees, and hear a name that convinces me to read a story.

I find the book on the publisher's website, buy it, and download it onto my Android tablet.

Then I remember the messing about with connectivity I had been playing with, so I run a sftp client to upload the .epub to the Linux box that acts as my Calibre server. Then I run an ssh client to use calibredb to add the book to my library, then I run Calibre Companion to bring it back to my tablet, within the Calibre ecosystem.

First time I'd try to do this, and it worked fine. But it did seem rather roundabout.

It seems to me that as more people keep their Calibre servers running around the clock so they can pull books into their mobiles from any place at any time, we're going to see more people wanting to load books into their libraries from any place at any time.

Is there such a capability planned? Or does it already exist and I've just not seen it in the docs?

It is something on Kovid's long-term TODO list.

Someday, calibre-server will have full read/write capabilities and be able to run the complete GUI with access to all metadata and book management, plugins, etc. -- the works. Or so I gather.
That would allow remote management via a server/client model, and open the door to multi-user mode.

Also planned is a cloud version of ebook-viewer, which will apparently support a bunch more features.

As you can imagine, this will be a major undertaking. There is no ETA.
But yes, the need has been noted.
