Cool Question about removing ads on SO Kindle

Hi guys, I asked my friend, who is currently working in Japan and about to leave Japan in 2 weeks to go to my country (not US), to buy a Kindle Voyage with SO on Amazon Japan. Now, I have a question:
- Does SO on Kindle Voyage only work in US but another country (including the version that is sold in Japan)?
- If I buy the version of Voyage that is sold in Japan, am I able to remove SO like advised in this link or any other method ? -> http://www.labnol.org/software/remove-kindle-ads/28341/
If anyone know or have ever experienced this please let me know, thanks in advance

Yes, Amazon has a reputation for removing the ads on SO Kindles when the owner does not live in the US. (The ads are only applicable to the US.)

Typically that is not a problem, as Amazon does not sell the SO version except in the US.

Would it not be more sensible to buy the version without SO in that case?

Do they really... how interesting. I was unaware. That would make Japan what, the only other location?

In any event, they are usually pretty good by all reports at removing the ads from Kindles in countries where they don't "offer" ads -- so it shouldn't be a problem.

But since Amazon sells SO Kindles at a lower price because the ads subsidize the cost, the right thing to do would be to buy the non-SO version.
That would also make things more definite.

P.S. If you want to post images, MobileRead includes an optional attachments feature, available in the Advanced Editing window. You messed up your link.
P.P.S. The image was too big, so it would've been removed as per the guidelines
.

I have only ever bought the advertising enabled version. Why spend the extra $20 or so? Besides, they are no bother at all and are even sometimes amusing. I should think ads in Japanese would be even more amusing.

The basic Kindle is sold with ads here in Italy. Not the Paperwhite though (and the Voyage hasn't even been released).

Interesting. I hadn't realised that they were rolling out ad-supported Kindles in other countries. The Fire has always had ads internationally, but the eInk Kindles only in the US.

LOL. I bought two SO Kindles, and only recently got sick and tired of the offers, none of which ever appealed. So I paid $20 and $15 respectively (Paperwhite and Fire) to remove them. Glad I did. But I'd sign up for the Japanese ads just to see them!

Just curious. In the U.S. the SO editions of the Kindles cost $20 less, which is exactly what it costs to remove the SOs if you don't like them. Is it the same in Italy and Japan?

I'm thinking of doing that as well, especially on the Fire. The ads seem more obnoxious in color for some reason. And the selection is different. I just had an ad for some kind of pills (antacid?) on my Fire.

I bought my Voyage here in Japan, immediately de-registered then re-registered it with my US account, then a week or so later payed in US dollars to disable the special offers. So at least Amazon US doesn't seem to care.

Yep, it costs 20€ less. I've never had to remove the offers from a Kindle, but I imagine it works as it does in the US. By the way, it's the same on Amazon.de.
Have no idea about Japan unfortunately.
