E-mail from Amazon about cloud drive

Quote:
Dear Vitaius Mark,

Thanks for being an Amazon Cloud Drive customer! Amazon Cloud Drive is introducing new unlimited storage plans.

You can now save all your photos in one place with the Unlimited Photos plan for $11.99/year, plus 5 GB for videos and files. Or, if you have more than photos that you need to keep safe, the Unlimited Everything plan is perfect for all your photos, video, files, and documents, for $59.99/year.

What happens to my current plan?
Your 5 GB plan is no longer available and has been replaced with a free 3-month trial of one of the Unlimited plans. Access to your existing files has not changed. You can continue to download and view your content. In order to upload new files you will need to pick one of the free 3-month trials.
My question is, does it effect the kindle's cloud storage? Because If it does, I'll be kinda mad :|

Does it affect "Send to Kindle" emailing of docs?

I got the same email. It said, " In order to upload new files you will need to pick one of the free 3-month trials." I didn't pick one. I tried sending some docs using "Send to Kindle." The docs arrived in my email inbox instantly, but in my Kindle, they are stuck on "queued." This is unusual. I have seen them queued before but not for this long (about 3 hours).

I don't see how this could be related to the Clouddrive change, but the coincidence makes one wonder.

short answer. the sendtokindle function goes to personal doc storage. personal doc storage was consolidated with amazon cloud services awhile back.

so when i accepted the free trial, lo and behold sendtokindle worked again.

i sent amazon customer service a query on this. they didnt' confirm specifically on sendtokindle just that amazon cloud was now paid and uploading required payment (eventually)

It seems like the sending to Kindle part should be unaffected, but that docs will no longer be stored in the cloud unless you have cloud storage. However, some people are reporting problems. Someone needs to call Kindle support and ask. There could be ax glitch due to the policy change.

i think you need to turn-off personal document archiving in settings (manage your content).

but in doing so, you no longer sync bookmarks etc

which is one of the reasons i prefer kindle / amazon over .epub / ipads.

so is $11 pa a lot - no (i accept not everybody has the financial perspective)

is $11 pa a lot to pay just for bookmark syncing - it's getting to that point.

This is messing me up a bit. I been paying for the 20 gig plan that was $10 a year and I also pay for the music cloud which is 24.99 a year. Now I have no option to pay $59.99 instead of $10. I don't really need unlimited, but I do need about 20 gig.
Dropbox doesn't have a plan for me either, I don't need a $10 a month plan which is even double than what I have to pay on Amazon now.

I use send to kindle a lot so that my non kindle purchases are in my cloud and whatever other docs I have.

So I am going from paying $35 a year for doc/file and music cloud storage to paying $85.

UPDATE:

The queuing problem is gone. Sending personal docs to my Kindle is working normally and I have not selected a free trial of the new paid options. Since the email said you cannot upload to your cloud storage until you select a free trial of a paid plan effective immediately, this seems to mean that Sending to Kindle is not affected by today's announcement.

Archiving of those documents is, of course, another matter.

Removing a small freemium service is common among bait and switch startups. It's very rare among the giant companies. For me, it's a major black eye for Amazon.

It seems to me that just buying ebooks from Amazon and an ereader isn't spending enough for the average customer in Amazon'e eye. I now have a Kindle Fire and because of that I took Prime, both of which get me 5GB of Cloud storage free, so I have 10GB in total.

I wonder if this is just a move to get Prime to seem more reasonable and possibly to move customers over to Fires (perhaps like me in addition to an ereader) and maybe they think those customers spend more in a year?

I strongly suspect, Josie, that only a very small minority of Kindle users make use of the personal document service and that the "average customer" won't notice this change. All my friends with Kindles buy their books only from Amazon and hence won't be affected by it.

I've been using Kindles since the days of the K3 and have personally never used Amazon's Cloud storage.

i'm not so sure about that assertion, my sample set of friends with kindles do use the PDOC service to some degree.

and given the angst (or perhaps confusion) here it's a function that has some relevance to users

Worth stressing that the personal doc service will continue to work unchanged. All that may change is that your personal docs will no longer be stored in the Cloud (although at the present time reports indicate that it's still working as before).

I was just reading the info in the help section for the cloud storage and found this note :
Note: Kindle Personal Docs will no longer count against your Cloud Drive storage limits.
Here is the link with the info.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custo...deId=201731340.
I have never posted a link before and I am on my iPad so I hopes this works.

Cloud Drive will show a folder for send-to-kindle docs (you can delete and download from there) but it no longer counts against whatever Cloud Drive storage you are entitled to (or pay for). I have not seen any information about what the Send To Kindle limit is, if indeed there is one.
