Question Resources question: Australia / New Zealand

I think I'm in the right place to ask for this advice, or mods please move me if there's a better one.

A NZ friend from a non-book forum has lamented their online book resources a time or two. I think they'd often fall into the same block as Australia for books, but please correct me if you know better.

Thus I'm wondering if anyone from ideally NZ or potentially Australia can advise me on whether some of the smaller independent sites are available to you. The ones that came to mind recently are Humble Bundle and StoryBundle, but similar suggestions are welcome too.

I don't think my friend is interested in learning to play VPN games, and they're not necessarily set on "all deals all the time," but I gather the local book prices collide with their budget and bookaholic nature badly.

Thanks for any advice!

Do you mean paper books or e-books? Paper books are expensive, but you can buy e-books from the international suppliers such as Amazon and Kobo without any VPN games. The only local e-book supplier I know of is meBooks (https://mebooks.co.nz/index.php). I've bought a few books off them, all DRM-free, and freely available for either Kindle or ePub..

Thank you for the context! I thought I had seen previous comments implying that ebooks could also be pretty expensive for you guys, and I hated to ask my friend, "So is it the local book pricing market, or are you really really broke?" I'm now thinking it's more of the latter, which is a tougher nut to crack.

I've bought from both StoryBundle and HumbleBundle.

As a general rule, both paper books and ebooks are more expensive in Australia. I think the difference is lower for ebooks, but it isn't unusual to find an ebook here for $20 and less than $10 in the US. The bigger issue has been availability of books. Traditionally, we received books from the UK publisher. That meant different editions with different covers, use of single quotes instead of double and "corrected" spelling. This is still happening, and I frequently see books listed here in the deals section that Amazon and Kobo won't sell to me. A search on the title will usually find the version for here, but it will be full price.

I haven't looked for a while, but, I remember the prices in New Zealand tended to be a little higher than here. But, in the Kobo shop at least, the editions available can be different. Sometimes they have the US instead, and sometimes they seem to have both.

I've bought from Humble Bundle before. Also, with Kobo you don't need to 'play VPN games', just change your country in your account settings. (Works on Amazon too at the moment, I think.)

If they're broke I suggest trying the library.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone, I appreciate it. I was trying to get a sense of how the deals played out for you guys, and I have a better idea now. I have the impression my friend is in the "read everything in the library. Twice" corner of obsessive-reader-versus-small-community, and I'd like to pass along the deals that might be useful and skip the ones that will just be useless and irritating.
