Stuck with button navigation in some apps

I'm trying to learn to use the navigation buttons, rather than rely on a stylus. However, I'm finding that I get stuck when trying to navigate some apps, such as google's Play Books.

The problem is that the "cursor" is restricted to the top navigation bar icons - I can't find a way to actually open a book without the stylus. I've tried button combinations such as "page down" and the pressing down on the right-hand rocker, but no luck. Focus still stays at the top navigation bar...

Any suggestions?

Same here, the M96 is quite unusable without the stylus (except for some pdf reading...). Even using the stock browser is a pain.

I think it would be an improvment to be able to control a cursor with the 5-way button.

Yup. Here's a workaround - might not be your favorite, but if you're stuck without a stylus, this'll work.

Navigate to the MAGNIFYING GLASS Search icon. The keyboard will pop up - start typing in the book you want to read. Then - when it starts to pop up, press the BACK button to make the keyboard disappear.

Then use the directional stick to head to the search field. It'll populate with the most recent search up there, ready to be selected. Click on it and it'll open the book.

And, actually, if you want to go REALLY REALLY deep down the rabbit hole, you can root your device and install TASKER. Then you can run shell SENDEVENTS to emulate the touch screen.

It seriously ain't for the faint of heart. But after tinkering around with my new M96 today, I have it so that:

Google Play Books automatically selects the latest read book.

Kindle App boots up in two different behaviors (based on how I've set it). One behavior launches the last read book (which is what I'll normally want to have happen).

The other behavior is to open the app, click on the home drawer, and then click on "On Device." Once it's on that screen, I can use my directional stick to navigate to the book I want (you have to do it "blind," though - there's no indication on screen that you're navigating where you want to go).
