That's all you get.... there is a hack that will change the icon to %, but you would need to jailbreak and apply it.

Please use the forums correctly. Is it not reasonably self-evident the questions about the Kindle belong in the Kindle forum, to where I'm now moving this? It's in your own interest to ask questions in the right place!

Anyway, going back..... I find it frustrating that % is not included in the battery icon since this is a good indicator for making sure you take care of your battery life. I hope they include that in the next firmware.

Yeah, that was an uncharacteristically brash response from Harry. Harry's generally a really nice guy!

You don't need a battery percentage on e-Ink devices. They draw too little power for such a feature to even be relevant... When (or better yet, "if") you ever receive a low battery warning, chances are that you can still probably finish the book, or at least another 2-3 chapters or so. I haven't received such a warning in weeks.

I've been reading on e-readers since 2007-2008, and 2011-today, and in all that time, I've only seen a low battery warning once, and that's because I pushed the KPW to show it. Even when showing the low battery warning at 15%, I'm sure can finish at least another 150 pages or so.

Before that happens however, the Kindle has been partially or even fully recharged, either to me just putting it on the charger on a whim, or because I connect it to the computer to upload some books, and then just leave it there until I turn off the computer.

I can understand that one would like a percentage-based battery indicator on a phone or a tablet, and on the Kindle because one is used to it, but on an e-reading device it's unnecessary, except if you're hell-bent on driving the device down to 0%. (This is something you shouldn't actually do with a Li-Ion battery. It is much better to just recharge it at the earliest opportunity.)

I charge my Paperwhite every Saturday so I never have to care about the battery. From one Saturday to the next it rarely goes below about 60% judging from the icon, and most often it's more like 80% or more.

I think one of the reasons they do it this way is because the battery gauges on inexpensive devices are very unreliable and putting a percentage in the gauge would be misleading and make it's inaccuracy more obvious and probably create resentment in customers.

That's right. Accuracy goes out the window with percentages. It's better to just "ballpark" it.

PS: Fun fact, e-Ink screens don't take up any power while the image remains still. Only when it changes.

Probably not necessary however I charge all my mobile electronics when I go to sleep, my blackberry, paperwhite, 3DSI, Kindle Fire. Seems to be necessary for the fire and blackberry but not the paperwhite and the 3dsi however I like to have these things ready for me at full power when I am active in the day time.

While on the subject of battery life, how close to reality is Amazon's claim of only needing to charge the battery every two months at 30 minutes of use per day? That's 30 hours of use on a charge. This assumes WiFi is off.

I don't get anything close to that, but my use is not typical. I use the browser to read newspaper and magazine articles every day. I made a doc of links to all my regularly visited sites (much better than the "experimental browser" bookmarks) and find fetching fast enough (with images off) and articles highly readable in "article mode." Sometimes if I'm home and I'm sitting at my desktop computer, I'll use The Kindle for web browsing long articles. I do this about one hour a day, on average, and judging by the battery icon, it looks like a full charge would last about 10 hours.

For those of you who just download and read books, does the battery icon state at 75% or 50% suggest 30 hours of your typical use per charge?

While I haven't done any in depth studies, Amazon's claims seem reasonable to me. I never have wi-fi on, always sideload my books and use my KPW2 only for reading fiction--don't do any highlights or note taking. I read anywhere from between 1/2 hour to 3 or 4 hours a day depending on my schedule. Usually charge my PW when it gets to about 50% battery life--which is probably every 10 days to 2 weeks.
