Jailbreak 5.6.1.0.6

Hi

Just bought a paperwhite 2 running 5.6.1.0.6.

I want to jailbreak it in order to import collections from calibre.

I can't find a tutorial that fits my software version.

Can anybody help?

Thanks!!

That's because there isn't one. (Unless you crack it open and go the serial route, in which case there is).

Ok - what to do then? Downgrade?

The important thing for me is not to jailbreak - but to sync collections.

You can't downgrade.

Hmmm ok. Annoying!

Is there any way I can create collections on my pc (preferably using Calibre) and transfer them to my KPW2?

Nope, except the 'official' and annoying way, which is to go through the PC/Mac Kindle software, apparently?

(Not really well versed in all the Cloud Collections crap, sorry ^^)

The official amazon way doesn't support books in collections that I didn't purchase through Amazon, right?

Being a Dane I buy all my books from Danish vendors...

You have three choices. Keep your PW2 and manually deal with collections, return your PW2 and try another that might have a jailbreakable firmware, or return your PW2 and get a Kobo that does have collections that can be created with Calibre.

Or you could use a plugboard to name your books with Title [#] Series (or any combination/order that you prefer). With search you could easily find all books in a series that way at least. I'm guessing you could add the genre to the name as well (although I'll admit I've never tried that, but it should work if you use a single genre per book). That would give you a cheesy workaround to true collections on the reader.

I got the PW2 because it was on sale at a fantastic price. It's not a reader that I'd ever use as my main reader though, I really only use it to download freebies that Prime members get to borrow monthly. Not being able to do collections other than manually really is a huge drawback for me (but not the only one).

Thanks for the suggestions!

I just bought the PW2 in Germany and since I live in Denmark I can't return it, so I'll stick with it.

I guess there must be someone out there working on a way to jailbreak this software version. Do you guys know anything about that and is there somewhere on the internet where I can follow the progress?

Or is it naive to wait for a jailbreak?

Thanks again!

Amazon pulled out all the stops this time. No telling if or when the JB gets fixed.

or .... the really simplistic way (from somebody who can't be bother to jailbreak anything) -- I keep a text file which lists what books are in what collections, by author, series, order, etc. Then I mail that to my kindle (and I actually more often just use it OFF my kindle, on dropbox, accessed on a phone or ipad or computer).

In other words, I ignore the fact that the kindle won't organize my books. I make a list. Sigh. Yeah, it's a pain, but it's easier than fighting it. For me, anyway.

Never buy a Kindle if you cannot live with the stock firmware as you don't know if you'll get one that can or cannot be jailbroken.

Whats the best e-reader if it has to be jailbroken/solve the collection issue and it has to be a good read in complete darkness (I often camp in the wild)?

(I choose the kindle because of the backlight-thing)
