Aldus Manutius: Father of the Portable Book

The Grolier Club in Manhattan is hosting an exhibition of the work of Aldus Manutius, a late-fifteenth-century Venetian printer who is credited as the first to print books in a smaller, more portable format, according to this article. He was also the first to print in italic type.

It's odd how that world was so different from ours, and yet some things still sound so similar.

I understand that when he died copies of his pocket editions were buried with him. And Italic type gets its name from the fact that he was Italian and he did his printing in Italy.
