Support Calibre database on cloud?
Dear Chaley,
The CC works great, worth it. I just wonder if you ever plan for cloud? I purchased Calibre Cloud, too, but I dont use it in the end because the lack of update and feature. |

Some thought was put into it. chaley never did bring up the idea again, perhaps he forgot, perhaps he simply hasn't gotten around to it yet. @chaley, what say you re: the status of the original tentative suggestion? EDIT: Ninjaed! ![]() |

i use both. CC if my library PC is awake, C cloud if it's not.
given that C cloud is not accessing your actual live calibre library ( unless you are daft enough to keep that in dropbox), and not in direct contact with your calibre program, it's hard to see what "features" a competing program could offer that would be better ( just my 2c) I think my only gripe would be that it lacks the ability to sort on tags , or on series. I forget which one it can't do , which shows how often I use it ![]() an ad-free version in the amazon store would be nice, also, but I guess C cloud sales to date do not justify the effort... |

I wish to use only one app to connect with Calibre, and CC provides syncing, intended download location per file type, showing what is locally available and what's not, among others. Without those, I would simply use the built-in OPDS browser of readers.... except for the case of Kindle.
However, it seems this approach may include too much of complication to justify. I can just wait. |

I intended (and intend) to do it, but I am finding it hard to work up the enthusiasm to start a project that large. Every time I start to think about a full cloud app I get caught up in the inevitable performance problems and the complaints and dissatisfaction that sure as sunrise these problems will trigger. Twice I have started to build "Option 2" described in the first post of the thread BR & eschwartz pointed at, and both times I threw away the work because "if you aren't going to do it right, it is better not to do it at all." I am still tempted to add option 2 to base CC because it is simple enough that I wouldn't need to monetize it. Running in circles, I am.
Re amazon: there is some question whether they allow cloud-storage apps in the appstore that don't support their cloud. The official Dropbox app not being available on Amazon supports this theory. However, Microsoft OneDrive is available on Amazon, which argues the other way. |

I think they'd block you, just like they block all those rival reader apps with text to speech inbuilt but then again, they are selling Kindle Client for Dropboxat £1.99 ( with crap reviews) for my Kindle. i don't suppose you can ask them before doing the devlopment work ? |

And they allow apps such as ES File Explorer which explicitly allows you to connect to cloud storage from a variety of vendors.
I'd love to see this, even if it were a separate (and therefore monetized) option. |

amazon are very anti-competition when it comes to browser and reader apps. For indie apps, I usually contact author to say that i'd buy an ad-free pro version if they sold one via amazon, & usually get no response. ( e.g. the particular foobar2000 controller app that i use a lot is a sideload of the free google version). the ones that amazon sell are not by the same author. He does not reply to email , where I explain that if i were to buy his pro version from google store I would not be able to copy & sideload it. So no sale) you'd have to ask both amazon and dropbox whey the official aopp is not there. maybe dropbox have not bothered to upload it , but that is unlikely. but even if a downloadable & KF compatible app is there, the noob android user is still stuck unless they a) download another app like ES explorer in order to locate and install the dropbox apk, and b) disable their only install apps from trusted sources security. All very interesting but somewhat off topic. the original topic issue as to whether a cloud enabled CC would be allowed in- app stores is still a "maybe, maybe not" As for other cloud options, I don't think any non amazon apps are allowed to access the users' amazon cloud storage, so rule that out, and Microsoft's one drive looks to be shooting itself in the foot by forcing a link to windows 10 login credentials , before it can be used therein. ( and when granted that it allegedly screws up windows fast start by insisting on synching before user can get productive on their shiny new PC. |
