Can't jailbreak kindle 3 3.4 1725970040
Can't jailbreak kindle 3 3.4 1725970040
I'm trying to jailbreak my kindle, I want to get a linux terminal running on it. I downloaded the jailbreak and put Update_jailbreak_0.13.N_k3w_install.bin in / . Almost forgot to mention the update my kindle option is greyed out. Is my firmware unsupported? Last edited by diskord; 03-09-2015 at 01:52 AM. Reason: adding more details |

What are the first four characters of your Kindle's serial number?

Yep, the older devices don't have a unified installer.
k3w is for B008 (Kindle 3 WiFi) k3g is for your Kindle 3 3G k3gb is for the UK edition of the Kindle 3 3G (I am fairly positive the "Installation" spoiler explains this? ![]() |

Yup, possibly with that very same variant, because a. that's the one I have, and b. that's the only potentially tricky one with the semi-eu 3g variant.

Thanks, I thought the w stood for wireless. Fell like sort of a dummy. Looking forward to getting a terminal on this thing so I have a portable little unix machine. My first use being as an interface to read my manpages. Here's the store I'm using to populate my kindle:
cat /tmp/kindle ChangeLog.txt extensions kindle KUAL.cfg KUAL-KDK-1.0.azw2 KUAL-KDK-2.0.azw2 launchpad __MACOSX mrpackages myts NEWS.txt README README_FIRST.txt README.txt Update_jailbreak_0.13.N_dxg_install.bin Update_jailbreak_0.13.N_dxg_uninstall.bin Update_jailbreak_0.13.N_dxi_install.bin Update_jailbreak_0.13.N_dx_install.bin Update_jailbreak_0.13.N_dxi_uninstall.bin Update_jailbreak_0.13.N_dx_uninstall.bin Update_jailbreak_0.13.N_k2i_install.bin Update_jailbreak_0.13.N_k2_install.bin Update_jailbreak_0.13.N_k2i_uninstall.bin Update_jailbreak_0.13.N_k2_uninstall.bin Update_jailbreak_0.13.N_k3g-3.0-to-3.2_install.bin Update_jailbreak_0.13.N_k3gb-3.0-to-3.2_install.bin Update_jailbreak_0.13.N_k3gb_install.bin Update_jailbreak_0.13.N_k3gb_uninstall.bin Update_jailbreak_0.13.N_k3g_install.bin Update_jailbreak_0.13.N_k3g_uninstall.bin Update_jailbreak_0.13.N_k3w-3.0-to-3.2_install.bin Update_jailbreak_0.13.N_k3w_install.bin Update_jailbreak_0.13.N_k3w_uninstall.bin Update_usbnetwork_0.55.N_k3gb_install.bin Update_usbnetwork_0.55.N_k3gb_uninstall.bin Update_usbnetwork_0.55.N_k3g_install.bin Update_usbnetwork_0.55.N_k3g_uninstall.bin Update_usbnetwork_0.55.N_k3w_install.bin Update_usbnetwork_0.55.N_k3w_uninstall.bin VERSION WHERE_ARE_THE_SOURCES.txt Kind of wish the package manager route had been more popular. I still haven't fiddled with any of this, so I don't know too much of what I'm talking about. |

Yeah well read those READMEs.
![]() Amen to Kindles as a portable unix machine -- guess what I am using right now? courtesy of baf's useful Kindle build of skipstone-browser. |

Not sure, are you using the kindle browser to reply to this thread. I've obviously overwritten a few of those pages. Want to get software loaded onto the machine, so used to package management that it hurts to crawl through forms to download software. Almost like using a Windows machine. |

Yep.
![]() Regarding package management on a Kindle -- there is only so much you can do on an embedded device where you don't control the pre-existing environment. Even Windows has Chocolatey, and linux has LFS where you "./configure; make; make install" everything without aid of a package manager. ![]() Theoretically we could write our own package manager or adapt another overly-featured one. But most people using JBed Kindles are using Windows anyway, and wouldn't even appreciate it. You can of course install a debian/archlinux chroot and do stuff there. ![]() Last edited by eschwartz; 03-09-2015 at 09:49 PM. |

Hmm debian chroot sounds pretty nice. Wish I could get debian out of the box with most devices. Well I've gone through the jailbreak processes and installed KUAL, usbnet, and a terminal. Doesn't look like there is man installed. Then has anybody built a man package? If not I have 2 choices:
1) build man myself 2) install debian chroot and man I'm not sure how big the debian chroot environment is. Also not sure where to look to attempt the install Regarding building man, has somebody made a live CD or similar that gets you up and running on building binaries for the kindle? Finally it looks like man is part of busybox. Isn't that part of the usbnet install? |

Debian works fine on my Kindle Touch, should work fine on your k3? Also, I've not seen anyone make a man page reader, do you want to make a terminal emulator version or gui? It wouldn't be useful to me, but it would be a great exercise to make sure everything is working right. A ways back, twobob even used his kindle to compile programs for his kindle using Debian on Kindle. Kinda cool, right? |

Busybox is also part of kindleOS.
![]() man is available -- but not manpages. Makes sense -- Amazon doesn't expect it to be used, so it would waste space on the typical Kindle. Thanks brianinmaine for the chrooting links. |

Must not be in my path. I'm going to just try to use an existing terminal. Then I will try to find the man command. After I will try to configure it, and copy the manpages over from my desktop.
