PW or Voyage
So I want a lighted Kindle and am looking at the PW and the Voyage. I know the Voyage has a higher PPI than the PW but it also costs significantly more. I wondered if the text quality varies greatly between the two. Also, is the lighting better on the Voyage or is there not much of a difference? Lastly, how are the buttons on the Voyage. I use a Kindle 4S at the moment and I actually like the buttons for page turning.

I've owned both the PW1 and PW2 and recently got a Voyage, primarily for the page-turn sensors. Although I have no complaints about the Voyage, now that I've used it for a few weeks I don't think it was worth the cost of the upgrade.
The increased screen resolution is noticeable when you look at them side by side, but isn't noticeable to me when reading. The page forward sensors work but are awkwardly placed (too low) and take more pressure than I'd expected. The page back sensors are too small to easily use and I prefer to tap the screen on the rare occasions when I want to page back. I use a case with mine and can barely detect the haptic feedback when I turn pages. even at its highest setting. Most of the time, I continue to tap the touchscreen to change pages just as I do on the PW. The screen lighting is fine for me on both models with no noticeable improvement on the Voyage. All in all, my actual reading experience on the Voyage is practically the same as on my PW2 and if I had it to do over again, I wouldn't have purchased it. Again, let me emphasize that I'm not dissatisfied with my Voyage and it's become my primary reader but it really isn't much of an improvement, if any, over my PW2 which is also a great device. For the price difference, I recommend the PW2 over the Voyage. If the higher cost doesn't matter to you, the Voyage is everything it claims to be and I think you'd be satisfied with it. Either way, you can't go wrong. |

Thanks jscarbo! You've definitely given me pause about purchasing the Voyage. I currently use the KS4. Compared to something like my phone, the text isn't as crisp. However, in well lighted places, it still provides a comfortable reading experience. I've tried using a book light for the KS4 but I find it isn't that great. Part of me wants the Voyage because it is the very best but the other part of me think I would be just fine with the PW2 and that I could use the savings to get a nice case.
Your experience with the buttons have also been helpful for me. I thought the buttons on the Voyage would be as responsive as the buttons on the KS4 but it doesn't seem like that is the case. |

I find the page sensors on the Voyage too insensitive.
However, I now use my right thumbnail on the black bezel near the silver strip and that works fine. I hold the device in my right hand and to turn pages I don't need to move anything more than my thumb. Tony |

I wish the page turn sensors worked for me as well as they do for Tony but even after several weeks of use I still have trouble positioning my thumbs correctly to get reliable page turns every time. Sometimes they work with a single press but more often I have to reposition my thumb and press multiple times. For me, it's easier to tap the screen just as I do on my PW.
As for cases, I really like the Omoton cases for both the PW and the Voyage. They're much less expensive than the official Amazon cases and they're attractive, lightweight and high-quality. Here's a link to the one I use with my PW: http://smile.amazon.com/OMOTON-Paper...aperwhite+case |

TonyGamble and jscarbo--just want to make sure you know that you can adjust the settings of the page sensors on the Voyage if you want to make them more or less sensitive. To access the settings in the settings menu go to Reading Options/PagePress

Thanks,
I have had mine on Low and it still requires a thumbnail to turn the page. Feedback, to me anyway, is a total waste of time. My eyes are my feedback !! Tony |

I have a Paperwhite and I'm real happy with it. I have no doubt the Voyage is better but how much better than superb can it be? I haven't seen the Voyage yet, though, so I can't be sure if I want one or not. I'll probably eventually get one but I'm not in a rush.

I have the Voyage, upgrading from a PW2. I love it. I use the page press buttons exclusively to turn the pages. The auto brightness works perfectly, I never have to change the brightness anymore like I did on the PW and the screen is much sharper with the text blacker and darker. I couldn't go back to a PW now. Oh and I have the origami case and use the stand feature all the time.

I decided to get the PW since it's on sale. I got it yesterday along with a magnetic Moko case. So far I love it. I had to get use to the lighted screen but once I adjusted the light to a comfortable level, it was fine on my eyes. The whitish screen is so different from the gray screen on my Kindle 4. Thanks for all the input and advice!

My sister brought me my Voyage when she came to Mexico a few weeks ago. Since the apartment we rented didn't have reliable WiFi, I spent my idle time reading with the Voyage and with my PW1.
I like the Voyage a lot. It's brighter and has better contrast than my PW1. I'm old and my eyes aren't what they used to be. I'd list all of my features that aren't what they used to be but it would be boring. I like the device being smooth across the front because it makes cleaning the screen a snap. After using the "buttons" for two weeks I gave up and turned them off. I am delighted with the on/off button on the back where I can actually find it although I do compliment Kindle for successfully hiding the button on my PW1. I don't like the Origami Case that I ordered with the Voyage. I like the Voyage a lot but as I drove home from the coast I considered what I would do if my Voyage broke or was stolen and decided the improvements over the PW1 aren't really worth the money to me. I'd get a PW2. |

Here is my.02 cents, you need to go through the list of things that the voyage has that the paperwhite does not have and attach a dollar figure to each. for example, personaly I'll pay $15 for the extra screen resolution and $30 for the light sensor (I think that's a great improvement). Then add up all of the amounts and if the sum is more then the cost difference of the paperwhite to the voyage then buy the voyage. In my example the voyage is worth $160, not quite the cost of the voyage so it's a no go.

Questions about the PW2:
- Can I upload DRM free books from my laptop to the PW2? - does the PW2 tell you how many pages are left in the chapter? - Can I load iBooks onto the PW2 Right now I have a Sony T1 but it won't last forever and I want to be ready to quickly replace it when the time comes. Am considering either the PW2 or a mini iPad. Would appreciate any thoughts Thanks |
