Tooltips for narrow columns
When viewing the spreadsheet you can have (preference setting) tooltips show, even for a column that is more narrow than the contents.
But if you try and Edit, the pulldown respects the column width, making it impossible to correctly select the correct item if the only difference is at the far (hidden) end. Is it possible to have a tooltip of the full pre-selection if the width is not capable of display? |

@theducks - yes I see this too, if the column is too narrow to display full values then after F2 to enter Edit mode, traversing the list with up/down arrow will behave as you suggest - show truncated values. However, if you click the
I get around the problem by having different View Manager views for Browsing and Editing. In the Editing view the fields I normally edit are arranged in the order that 'makes most sense', full width, and left most. Added : I may have misunderstood what you want. I can't see what a tooltip has to do with the truncated values when you edit. Unless you're wanting the tooltip truncated to the column width - which I for one certainly wouldn't want ![]() BR Last edited by BetterRed; 03-14-2015 at 05:55 PM. |

I don't see the full width on the pulldown,it is the same as the column.
Interestingly If you tap F2, it shows the end. If you pull down, you only see the start The tool tip would let you see all DURING A PULLDOWN |

@theducks - ah-ha, I think you're referring to a column like author or tags
For some reason I homed in on columns with a defined set of values ![]() To do that with a column that has dynamic values (like tags or author) one would probably need to squirrel away the length of the longest value and build the drop down to that width. I suspect the only answer is 'user must make the column wider' - but Kovid or chaley might come up with something. The tooltip is sized to the length of the cell under the pointer, so I don't see how it helps. If the Author is "Violet Bonham Carter" the tool tip is 20 chars wide, if its "Homer" its 5. If it's the tags column and the cell contains values imported from Amazon the tooltip could overlap into next week Book Details ![]() BR |

Changes were committed to calibre source today to make Calibre able to open an editor larger than the column width up to the size of the viewport. For date, text, and multiple value columns like tags, the box holds the current value, not the largest possible or existing value. For number columns (including rating) the box is sized to the maximum number allowable. For enumerated and boolean columns the box is sized to the longest permitted value. The change does not affect editing comments or composite columns.
For left-to-right languages the editor box is aligned if possible with the left edge of the column. If there is not sufficient space to the right (e.g., the column being edited is the rightmost column shown) then the editor box moves left pixelwise until it has enough space. For right-to-left languages the box is aligned on the right edge of the column. If there isn't sufficient space to the left then it will move right. |

Saw the the changes a short while ago, and... wow. Thanks!
This really does make a difference even if you never realized you had the need. ![]() |
